This is a breaking story. The White House on Tuesday slammed Amazon for reportedly planning to display the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariffs next to the total price of products on its site.
“This is hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press briefing. As an aside, I was recently adding groceries to my Wegmans app list and a notice popped up on the app after I added one item telling me that it will cost 10% more due to tariffs. This is a great idea and all retail companies should follow suit so that consumers can know what the real impact of the tariffs is. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/29/white-house-blasts-amazon-over-tariff-cost-report-hostile-and-political-act.html |
How is transparency a hostile and political act? Consumers only deserve information favorable to Trump? Are we getting to be like Thailand where it is a crime ot insult or criticize the king? |
I hope all retailers do the same. Put it there in black and white so everyone can see the cost to the American people. |
Exactly. |
In MAGA/Dictator World, anything that betrays "dear leader" is hostile. Kind of ironic given how much Bezos gave to trump and how he cratered the Washington Post in supplication to Trump. And if people don't think an authoritarian won't send some of these business leaders to El Salvador without due process if things keep up, I have a bridge to sell you. |
I guess she forgot the part about the inflation under Biden being a direct result of Trump's horrid mismanagement of COVID and the subsequent supply chain issues that were worldwide. I wish the White House reporters would follow up with a question as to why inflation was better in the US under Biden than anywhere else in the world? |
Justin Wolfers:
Amazon offers free advertising for the Administration's signature initiative, and for some reason the White House regards this as hostile. When I make smart decisions that make the world a better place, I'm usually proud of it, and want the everyone to know about it. So what's different here? |
Something to remember is that a third of eligible voters straight up didn’t vote, and even some people who do vote are pretty checked out and apathetic. I have family members who told me they don’t even bother watching the news because it doesn’t matter. Putting tariffs fees up while online shopping disrupts the apathetic. |
Tangible way to help people understand hoe to connect policy to impact! |
Yeah way to go amazon. Hey, while you're at it, why don't you also display the total amount of money you're distorting the market and keeping for yourselves and investors, in the form of gouging by the consumers and the sellers. |
Bezos will backoff. He's a Trump lackey now. |
They’ve kicked out almost all the actual reporters |
It’s a bunch of right wing influencers asking softball questions now. |
I don't understand why this is hostile? Why doesn't this encourage people to buy products that do not have the tariffs? Was that not the point of the tariffs? Or are they in fact a revenue generating mechanism that has nothing to do with encouraging people to buy American? |
