Waiting for Real ID to come via mail- need to fly

Anonymous
My elderly mother went to the DMV in NC to get her Real ID last week. Everything went great and they are going to mail her the Real ID "in 2 weeks". They gave her a Temporary Driving Certificate which is just a paper printout of her Real ID. We just got word that her sister in law is being moved to hospice and it won't be long. If her Real ID does not come in time for her to fly to the funeral are there any options? Her passport is long expired. I'm so frustrated right now. She renewed her DL 4 months ago and the DMV told her she didn't need the Real ID even though she had all of the documents with her. Now she had to pay again and we are in this stressful predicament.

Bring the temporary driving certificate, and the expired passport. Also bring the birth certificate. You should be fine.

Bring all the documents you need for a RealID to the airport. Leave LOTS of time for security, like hours.

And allow an extra 1-2 hours.

Also, the RealID has been in the works for over 10 years. This was hardly sprung on you out of nowhere...

Lesson learned to others. Real ID has been around for a number of years. Got mine in MD back in 2017. Don't wait until you or your loved ones need it. Take the steps now.

Very true. But in many states not everyone could get the Real ID because the DMV system was not processing things correctly. When our family moved to PA 7 years ago my DH and I had to show all of the same required documents that you need for the Real ID. We were told that PA was not yet issuing the Real ID but that we would be placed on a list to get one as soon as they were available. I got mine 3 years later. DH got his 2 months ago! In that time our teen dd got her drivers license. We were told the same thing, can't get it now we will let you know. It took 3 years for her's as well. All of this happened in those 10 years we all knew about Real ID.

Thank you to all of the posters that gave suggestions. Fingers crossed the ID comes in time. We will plan to have every document others have suggested as well as her most recent expired license and arrive at the airport a few hours early.

Sending best wishes to her SIL.

My 20 year old son recently lost his wallet and I’d between the hotel and the small airport on the East Coast that we are flying home from to dca. (We think it fell out of his pocket in the lobby or something.)

We were going to miss the flight, I thought, because he didn’t have an ID or even a credit card or any id of any kind. But we had his boarding pass on my phone.

The TSA agent had to phone someone at an outside place to log the issue and made him answer some questions about himself and me (without me next to him) who was traveling with him and had ID. They also did a full opening and inspection of his bag. But I couldn’t believe it they let him on the plane without any kind of ID.

This is the standard procedure. The questions they ask are the types you do online with a credit agency to verify you are who you say you are "what street is associated with a previous address?", etc

The news say you can still fly but bring every document you can think of and plan at least 1-2 additional hours before your flight than you normally would.

Why did you wait so long?
