Please help. Which club has the best Keeper program?

Anonymous
We are moving to the area with a 2010 daughter looking to find an ECNL club with a strong keeper training program. We are coming from Albion Hurricanes in TX. Our GK coach was amazing!!

A colleague said to check out Virginia Development Academy or Union but any other recommendations? They said to stay away from Arlington; something about that coach getting let go from a university program.

We also haven’t ruled out GA if we can find a good program so any recommendations would be appreciated.

TIA.

You won't find amazing here, but we liked the Union Keeper Coach. We didn't have a good experience with the Arlington keeper coach. Can't speak to VDA, we don't have experience there. Since you are also looking at GA, last year I heard from another keeper parent that Loudoun/NVA's keeper training is weak. Not sure if that is improving at all. Your best bet will likely be to find a team that your daughter likes and then find a private GK trainer. Good Luck!

She’s the best and I believe she’s partnered with Armour.

GK training needs to be done on the side so I would recommend finding the best fit where your goalie will play on a top team

Don't know every 2010 team well but here goes with a little red light green light for opportunity:

Union ECNL - Red - USYNT center gk
Bethesda ECNL - Red - USYNT center gk
VDA ECNL - Yellow - depends on how good your DD is
Arlington ECNL - Yellow - same as VDA
Rev GA - Green - top GA team at this age and would compete with current Gks
SYC - Red - weak team but with a strong goalie
NVA + LS GA - Green - no idea what their gk situation is
TSJ - Green - but don't bother

+1. Laurie is amazing. She does small group training and will make sure your kid is in a group that is appropriate for her skill level. She works the kids hard. If your kid is not serious about getting better, they will likely not enjoy it.

Laurie was ok. Traveling to her locations can be challenging. Bit pricey. If your daughter is coming from an ecnl club. I would avoid the summer keeper camp.

Don’t have a GK in Loudoun but I believe they recently upgraded that position from what I’ve heard around the park. I know the parents say the new training is much better them what it was previously - but as some stated, may have been a low bar.

Two missing teams : for GA, I would put Alexandria and McLean in the green/yellow light category. May be looking for a keeper to compete with existing ones and have dedicated, decent GK staff.

Your daughter is coming from a top 35 team. ECNL seems a better option for you to maintain similar competition. Fairfax, VDA or BSC. But as mentioned, Fairfax and BSC are locked in at gk.

Any recommendations on a private keeper coach? We are in Fairfax and Laurie is too far. Thanks.

Highly depends on what you’re looking for as well.

SYC is not as locked as you would imagine they currently only have 1 GK and has a great program with the opportunity to train with the MLS GK coach as well.

Arlington would give you the most opportunity to play immediately as they were deep in a GK search most of the tryout season.

Union is known to go with 3 GK’s on some of their teams and 25+ field players so that’s not ideal. They will roster off GK’s on a rotation from week to week.

VA Rev is up and coming. And have heard good things about their program. They currently only have 1 GK at that age group.

VDA, Union, NVA all have signed at least 2 GK’s for the fall season.

Also where will you be located? That is a big factor as some commutes could be well over an hour.

Golden Boot. Ask for Kristen.

Any chance she is trapped/Q4? I think several of the 2011s could use one

There may be more opportunity in MD at this point in the tryout season, Virginia's tryouts started March 1, MD does not start until May 1. Assume the majority of VA teams have at least 2 GK's committed for next season, a new player would most likely come in as a 3rd.

Here's what I know as far as number of GK's these teams currently have:

Bethesda ECNL - 1
MD United ECNL - 1
Arlington ECNL - 2
VDA ECNL - 2
Union ECNL - 2
TSJ GA - 1
NVA GA - 2
VA Revolution GA - 1
SYC GA - 1
Alexandria GA - 1

If you're further north....

Baltimore Celtic GA - 1
Baltimore Armour GA - 2
Pipeline ECNL - 2?
