Which W school is better?

Anonymous
I’m new to the area with a 14-year-old. I’m relocating from Texas. I’m going to be renting, and prices seem consistent between the clusters, so I want to know which one is better. I’m a novice, so please leave no stone unturned. Thanks in advance.

Look at the college commitment websites, will be clear which Ws are "better."

Then weigh outcomes with the question of more of a pressure cooker environment.

What does "better" mean to you?

College commitment is far from the best metric to measure " the best".

You will be fine with any of the Ws with this criteria. The marginal differences in these areas between the Ws are not going to be that appreciable.

Now if it was a choice between the Ws and non-W high schools in MCPS, then there would be a bigger difference in these areas that you’d need to consider.

Be aware that there is a huge boundary study going on that will affect all the “W’s.”

Your best tactic is to rent a place within a very short walking distance of the school, meaning there is no school bus service in that neighborhood.

I'm a big fan of Churchill. Good environment, plenty of opportunities for challenge, great principal and teachers, safe school. I can't compare it to others, but it has worked well for my children.

Having 4-6K a month for rent by no means you have the cash to purchase a 700 or 800K townhome are you serious?

Same for Churchill. Some very affluent students, but lots of down to earth kids too.

Whitman is also very affluent. I find the kids are the most badly behaved of the Ws at sporting events (can be mean-spirited in a crowd and I don't like it).

WJ is good, large, has the APEX program which is for smarter kids. Kids can leave for lunch in all grades, I think.

Wootton is similar to Churchill with higher SES families but less outrageous affluence.

My preference would be Churchill or Wootton, Whitman, WJ.
