Best hidden gem for a long weekend in the summer

Anonymous
We are looking to get away for 4 days at the end of summer with DC-7 years old. Willing to take a short flight if necessary but if driving would like to be within 4 hours of DC. Any recommendations appreciated, last year we did Boston and Williamsburg. We are not fans of NY, so nothing in that area.

Assateague is a complete dump. And the beaches are swarming with biting bugs. Avoid at all costs.

?? It’s a beautiful natural beach without a bunch of ugly condos to ruin the views. Horses, shorebirds, horseshoe crabs. Lovely place.

We had a nice long weekend in Roanoke-hiking (including a natural water slide), Natural Bridge, hit Luray Caverns in the way home.

Blackwater falls or Canaan valley in WV.

My kids like Staunton.

Lancaster. You can stay downtown (we love the Marriott), do Dutch Wonderland, visit the Central Market, hit the outlets, explore the covered bridges/Amish, and eat some great meals m
