is Green Acres safe?

Anonymous
Hi folks. Maybe I am just paranoid because of Sandy Spring. But is Green Acres in any danger of shutting down? I know they're having financial struggles, but how much? Because I had heard murmurings that SSFS was having some money problems but I never would have guessed just how severely. I know that Green Acres has changed their head of school, which may be a good thing? Not really sure. But my child goes there and I'm worried. Thanks.

Parent of alum. They seem pretty stable but there are no guarantees. Unlike SSFS, they own land that they could sell off if needed. When DS was there, they purchased some surrounding property.

It's sad about SSFS, but as someone who's been around the block, any experienced parent could have told you it was on the verge of collapse. There was too much pie-in-the-sky thinking and not enough solid, concrete, good old-fashioned PLANNING. The writing was on the wall for that school long before last week. Green Acres, however, seems to be doing well; that place they rented to did wonders for their bank account, and fundraisers and donations are plentiful and effective. From there, it's all a matter of credit cards, and Green Acres has got that business covered! The grizzlies have been through hard times, but they're in it for the long haul. Much love to SSFS kids, staff, and parents, it's awful what's happened

SSFS owes quite a bit of land... and then heavily mortgaged it.

But Diener has now moved out to their own space.

Why are people so hurt by schools closing? I’m genuinely curious—is it the emotional factor, the monetary factor, or both?

Transitions are difficult for kids. Especially when it's announced after the regular application season or for kids going into the last grade of the school.

+1. Frankly I'm surprised this even had to be explained.

I get why SSFS closing impacts SSFS people, but I swear people who have NO connection to the school are just using the (genuinely awful and upsetting!) news of its closure to try and get attention, including the OP. Disgusting to see.

Also, different kids fit well at different schools. Each private is at least somewhat different. It can be hard to find another good fit school in a nearby lication.

Separately, SSFS announced closure long after almost all other privates were full. So few other schools had any openings.

Are you bring deliberately obtuse? I’m not a SSFS parent but if you have planned your kids education and stability and it’s ripped out from under you, that’s pretty traumatic, yes it’s a first world problem but it’s still upsetting to deal with.

It's not evil, it's a legitimate point. The amount of people who are not affected in the slightest by this news who are using it to try and get sympathy is beyond me. People need to stop being such pick-me attention seekers. M'kay?
