Losing interest in travel

Anonymous
Anyone losing interest in travel? I feel like we have gone to many similar destinations and the excursions are all similar- rafting, horseback riding, spa, golfing, ropes course, nature walk, coffee/sugarcane tour, paddle boarding… any advice if you’ve been in this situation?

You could change your destinations. No one is rafting or zip lining in Rome.

But yeah, I’m at the point where spending $10k on a trip doesn’t bring me as much joy as $3k on local activities and $7k on house projects, so our travel budget has shrunk significantly. Especially now that DC is in year round sports and activities, it’s hard to carve out significant time to go anywhere. I’m using my vacation for long weekends and time with friends instead of foreign destinations.

Wait until a new muse reveals itself. Don't over think a current preference.

Try shorter trips.

I also enjoy visits to nearby places where you can throw your stuff in the back of the car and not worry about airports and bag limits and rental cars.

Try hiking and bird watching and reading a book while over looking a nice view.

Any advice? I don't understand. Do what you want.

It's okay to travel less for a period of time.

Sounds like you do the same type of vacation over and over. Try something new.

Yeah, same. Unless we are visiting family or friends abroad, it ends up feeling empty, so I've prioritized locations where we have loved ones.

Like an above poster, I've been rerouting that money to things that make my life in DC better -- a nice pool membership for the family, good bikes for everyone, various lessons and classes, etc.

I don’t do any of the activities you listed above when I travel. I love visiting new places to experience the culture, food, traditions, architecture, museums, etc…

+1 but it sounds like OP is traveling with youngish children if they are doing those activities. I would agree that traveling with children means you end up doing the same old stuff. My kids are now teens, and we've stopped going to water parks, rope courses, etc..

If I could travel like I did in my 20s I'd be more enthusiastic about it. No desire to travel beyond ski/beach with my husband or my teenagers at this point.

Go to a famous city and enjoy the culture, food and nightlife.

I can. Certain parts of France the menu was almost identical at every place eg moules frites. At home I'm jumping between cuisines every day which isn't always possible outside major cities. In the UK, we had to cut back on the full English breakfast after two days

Sounds like you’d prefer a city trip to a nature trip.
