Here's another thing we weren't told about before rushing our child onto ssris.

Highly doubt either of these posters went through a battery of blood, urine and stool tests to look for the many possible causes of anxiety and depression that are biologically based either, op.
I've yet to hear of a psychiatrist who looks for other causes before putting kids on ssris.

Not a great study, I think this issue needs higher quality research. From the article posted:

“The survey did not distinguish between specific types of antidepressants, such as SSRIs versus other drug classes, although most antidepressant prescriptions for youth are SSRIs or SNRIs. The data were also based on self-reports, which introduces the possibility of recall bias. Additionally, the researchers could not determine how long symptoms persisted after treatment or whether they were limited to reduced genital sensitivity or included other sexual side effects. The survey did not include baseline measures of sexual functioning before participants began taking medication, so it’s not possible to confirm whether the antidepressants caused the symptoms or simply coincided with them.”

Nutritionist, functional medicine, allergist, ABA, OT, PT, SLP consults, neurologist, neuropsych eval, clinical eval at school, additional testing as needed.

Changed diet, changed environments & routines, added services as needed, added vitamins/minerals, taught new skills, haven’t needed SSRIs yet. Still a last resort possibility for the future.

Well that kinda contradicts the "permanent" in the title. And no baseline measure is a huge red flag. Thanks for this synopsis. Agree that higher quality research is warranted.

DS, 18, is experiencing this now. He was on Zoloft for about 3 years for combo OCD/depression. He needed the meds so don’t regret that, but numbing is a problem. He has been put on a different med that’s supposed to help with the issue.
And PP why would you assume we haven’t tried everything? Of course we have! And no one puts kids on an ssri unless absolutely necessary. How about extend some compassion or don’t say anything??

You're overly sensitive. It's a failure of the psychiatric industry to hand out brain altering drugs with serious and unknown side effects without having a gold standard of pre-prescription testing. Parents aren't the doctors.

Parents jump to drugs for everything now. Most don’t actually try everything first, they want an easy out.

I was put on Prozac at age 9 and I am so thankful in retrospect that I went manic and went off after a few weeks. If there were no problems, I probably would have stayed on for years and that may have shut off my libido long-term or permanently.

I was on Wellbutrin from age 14 to almost 20, along with a mood stabilizer and antispychotic. I don't want to say my age, but I have been med free for many years and my physical and mental health has gotten so much better, and I now avoid pharamaceuticals as much as I can. They're hurting people everywhere and we're gaslit by doctors into thinking that it's a necesity and that the benefits outweigh the risks.
