Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s viral White House photo: serendipitous or The NY Times ending her career in politics?

Anonymous
Surprised I don’t see a thread on this. This was randomly put in an NY Times article on Friday and then predictably went hyper viral all weekend because it’s so childish and embarrassing. No other newsroom got this same shot? If so, they could have held it. Was this deliberately ending her political future (…to the benefit of Josh Shapiro and perhaps Gavin Newsom)? In journalism terms, a scalp.

She was supposed to have a private meeting with Trump and he ambushed her with reporters. F Trump.

Oh whatever. People have short memories. Who cares

It was a such a low blow, agree.

She was there to lobby for her state and got sucked into the signing of an EO. Perfectly her right to not wish to be photographed doing that as it implies she may have supported it. Printing this photo was childish and irresponsible. And definitely smacks of being harder on Dems than republicans.

Reporters treat women poorly compared to me. Look at Notes from a Cracked Ceiling. That's a really sh_tty thing for a reporter to do and eve sh_ttier for NYT to publish. So glad I stopped paying for them -- tired of their agenda to sink Dems.

Also, Gavin Newsom will NEVER win. He's full-on MAGA, which he's made clear.

Trump looks like the ahole, as per usual.

Why would this end GW's career? It's okay to rape people like Dumpy has done but not okay to attend a 1-1 meeting where the President ambushes you with reporters?

Her “right” not to be photographed? She is public official in a public building on official public business.

I don’t see how this is career ending? I would have shielded my face too! It’s a symbolic gesture of being anti Trump

Agreed. People are photographed coming and going from the White House all the time. GW caused her own problem by hiding her face. Smarter move would have been to smile, act like she belongs there, and tell reporters that she's fighting for Michigan. Put simply, it made her look guilty and embarrassed to be there.

So you think The NY Times was given a head’s up and suspected she’d react in such a way? Her just standing there and getting photographed wouldn’t have gone viral. Her spontaneous childish reaction made this go viral. NY Times is the only pool photographed (out of a dozen?) that got the folder money shot? The whole thing is weird. And it wasn’t the only bad photo. And even friendly in-state outlets helped it go viral. Almost like this had some big coordination behind it to harm her politically — not just as a POTUS candidate but even a VP candidate in 2028.

For me, it was ending her career. I was sad and disappointed.
