China Suspends Export of Critical Rare Earth Minerals

China has halted exports of critical minerals and magnets needed to make everything from cars, drones, missiles and semiconductors amid an escalating trade war between the world’s two biggest economies, according to a report.
China has ordered restrictions on exports of six rare earth metals refined only within its borders, according to a report by the New York Times Sunday which mentions a U.S. a chemicals supplier suffering restrictions. Restrictions also included rare earth magnets, of which 90% are made in China, and shipments have already been halted at many Chinese ports.
The critical metals, and the magnets made using them, can now only be exported out of China with a special license, according to the report. Beijing is currently drafting a new regulatory system that could permanently prevent components from reaching American companies.

Thanks for posting the excerpt. Xi is demonstrating the limited use of Trump's tariffs. By blocking exports, he is re-raising Trump's tariffs to infinity, and showing how the 145% tariff is hurting the US more than China. Someone posted in another thread about how resolute Xi is. His citizens could love him or detest him, but we will never know because they are too scared to say anything. A citizen complained about a parking ticket and got arrested.

These elements are available elsewhere, including the US in shuttered mines, but China owns at least 80% of the processing, so they basically own the supply chain.

Since T-Boy seems to have aggravtaed the rest of the world, not many will be inclined to facilitate his battle with China. And ourt shuttered mines? How many years to make them productive again?

Eh. US has huge stockpiles of rare earth. Rare Earths really aren't that rare. US already has Mountain Pass and used to be the world's leader in rare earth sales until China undercut us. We can just restart Mountain Pass. There are also all sorts of ways to recycle rare earths to extend what we have already for a very long time. Apple largely recycles rare Earths already.
