| Why do these still exist for college students? I thought non paid internships were illegal. |
| Only at for-profit firms -- unpaid internships for non-profits or government are legal |
+1 Some colleges have a fund to provide $$ for students taking an unpaid internship. |
At my DS's Ivy, they have a stipend. His trust fund friend, who spends lavishly, qualified for a stipend to help finance nonpaid internship in London set up through friends of parents but my DS who comes from a donut hole family wasn't awarded $$ for real internship he earned. But then trust fund friend has also figured out how to get financial aid, so there's that. |
| My junior is doing an unpaid internship at a startup that a relative got for him. We are fine with it due to the experiences he will get and we can afford. |
Not entirely correct. In a for profit company, "courts to examine the “economic reality” of the intern-employer relationship to determine which party is the “primary beneficiary” of the relationship." If it's the company, then it's paid, if it's the student, it can be non-paid. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/71-flsa-internships |
| I really wish they'd do away with them. It so limits the applicant pool. |
This position is nonetheless illegal -- Hope the startup gets caught! They should at least pay him minimum wage. It's disgraceful they won't. |
I hope they don't! |
| Let your kids get jobs flipping burgers, not exposure and connections in professional world. Great move. |
Crazy. My kid got an internship at a startup and made a ton of money, as typically they are flush with money. |
|
My kid interviewed for an unpaid internship that requires the intern to get college credit for the internship. Is that how they get around paying?
|
Yes. |
Which is part of the problem. |
| Unpaid internships are just a way for companies to take advantage of naive, desperate students trying to build their resumes. I never worked one, and neither will my kid. Either get a real internship or lifeguard and "court the ladies" (for you language-policing Karens). |
