Fairfax county is going to reduce the roads from four lanes to two lanes in multiple areas to install bike lanes that almost no one uses. The county apparently ascribes to nonsense trendy theories from clueless urban planner that believe people in low density suburbs will walk and bike to work in locations miles away from their homes.

| MoCo. Been there done that. Installed on Old Georgetown Road during the pandemic. Pre-2020 traffic was already bumper to bumper. It now extends for miles each morning and evening. Traffic light changes too. Use to be set for through-put -- moving cars through lights, without speeding and driving the stated speed limit. Now, you can make it from one light to the next, where it turns red. So stopping at nearly each one. |
| That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Will only make people move farther away. |
These road diets are in Annandale, Chantilly and Springfield. It’s not like this is somewhere in DC or NYC. It makes absolutely no sense. |
|
Metrotech Dr in Chantilly is an industrial/shopping area with a ton of traffic,
Not a place anyone wants to or needs to bike |
| They did this to Fullerton Rd by the Springfield Costco a few years ago. I have never once seen a person biking in the new lanes, presumably because they dead end rather suddenly at a narrow bridge before you can get anywhere useful. |
Why are these people so stupid? I regularly drive past those red bikes that are available for people to rent. No one uses them. |
| I would love some more bike lanes. Maybe you guys should try commuting on a bike once in a while. It’s way more pleasant than sitting in traffic. |
Inhaling car exhaust, and dealing with DC temperature extremes (which prevail during about 9-10 months of the year), is not "way more pleasant" than anything. Have fun biking to work on Tuesday in 40 degree weather with 20 mph winds. When I want to bike, I do it on a trail in the woods, not doing battle with car traffic. |
Rockville Town Center. It's ridiculous. Road markings are confusing. Lanes are reduced to one each way. I avoid the area now. There is just not enough bike traffic. In DC I see them work. Not in the suburbs |
| One lane in each direction is fine and dandy if people actually drive properly. The problem is that between people texting while driving, the uber deliveries and pickups, and people who seem perpetually lost or confused, it's common that you need the second lane to get around some sort of obstacle. |
| Disaster in Montgomery County - Old Georgetown Road. Can't believe they spent so much money to create this nightmare for so many for the few who bike. And no, more people are not going to bike just because the lanes are there, because the drivers are distracted and it's not safe (turns on and off that go through the bike lanes), the weather, the lack of showers at the office, the sheer volume of stuff to bring to work, that they may need to get back to get a sick kid in a hurry and so many more reasons |
People should bike 25 miles to their work in DC? What are you even talking about. Metrotech drive is literally 25 miles away from DC and it would take almost 3 hours each direction to bike to an office in DC. Annandale is a 13 mile bike ride from DC. Many people are disabled or elderly and they cannot bike to their work. This is very arrogant and inconsiderate to assume everyone is a young able bodied 20-something or 30-something that can use bike lanes to commute to work. |
|
My co- worker used to bike until they were side swiped by a car. It isn’t worth it.
-I biked to work for years, but used the path along the parkway. |
The light changes are the worst. Hope you know the backroad alternatives. |
