My family just got back from Denmark yesterday after a wonderful week. We spent most of our time in Copenhagen but I took the train with my two children 6 & 9 to Billund for 2 nights at the end of our trip. We've been to Copenhagen twice before (once a long layover, 2nd time was a longer visit at Christmas) and have fallen in love with the city. I utterly love Copenhagen and would happily move there if given the chance.
We took the train from Copenhagen Central to Vejle St. (Vejle Station) on DSB. You NEED to reserve the number of people & your seat reservations in advance. I had checked earlier and it looked like there were plenty of seats and I wasn't sure which exact train we would be able to make with our schedule, so I decided to book it last minute....that was a mistake. We were still able to buy our tickets but not reserve seats. My older son found a single seat and I found another seat that I shared with my younger child one car down. My younger child gets super hyper and impulsive when tired and this created a huge amount of stress for us. The train itself is great but just book your seats ahead of time (preferably in the family room) so you can get a booth-type seat. We easily found the bus (43) from Vejle St- Billund/ hotel legoland. You must pay in cash (euros or Danish kroner) or via the app but you need to have a European phone to use the app). There is an ATM there at the train station, a 7-11 and a very nice bakery. The bus was on time and very pleasant. We got dropped off basically in front of our hotel. We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Legoland and I 100% recommend it. There is a huge tree-house themed play area in the reception, a lego car with duplos, legos, and a bunch of switches for kids to play with and another a lego play area on the other side of the reception along with a small 24/7 snack area and shop. There are lego play areas on every floor with awesome lego creations everywhere. Our room was amazing and each child got a small bagged set of legos in the room, plus there was a whole bin of legos to play with and several mazes on the walls. There was a lego ninjago night light lol. The beds were extremely comfortable. There were multiple other play areas throughout the hotel and we didn't even make it to them all. The playgrounds between several of the hotels connect in one spot through hallways, so the castle hotel and the lego hotel area actually connected. My kids LOVED the giant castle playground, it was definitely one of the coolest playgrounds!! Breakfast was included and was amazing. It was buffet style and included everything you could ever want. My younger child grabbed some boiled eggs but they were actually a little bit softer boiled and slightly goey in the middle (Which to me was perfection!!). Delicious bread, pastries, yogurt, the coffee machines that are literally everywhere make a delicious latte or cappuccino. We spent our first full day at the lego house. I made reservations for the Mini-chef restaurant and it was terrific!! It was so fun building our menu requests in legos and greeting the robots. The food was delicious. My only regret is that I wish I had made a later reservation because we were still all pretty full from breakfast. The Lego House is essentially a HUGE, interactive children's museum and they have all these different centers where you get to do interactive things with the legos. It was SO much fun. There are several really cool playgrounds outside but we barely made it out to them because were so busy inside. We could have EASILY spent 2 full days just at the Lego House. It closes at 4pm but the store is open until 5 and the outdoor play area is open too. I wish it was open later. You really do need the entire full day if your kids like legos. We got there at 11 because I thought (correctly) that we would be tired and my kids would want to play and have a relaxing breakfast before coming. We had a light dinner back at the hotel in the panorama restaurant and while I loved it for breakfast, I did not like it for dinner. It was extremely expensive and my chicken sandwich was drenched in sauces and gross. We went to Legoland the next day (opening day) and while there were certainly lots of people there, it was not mayhem and we waited no longer than 20 minutes for maybe 1 ride. They have lots of really fun playgrounds in the park, miniland was cool, ninjago world was pretty lame tbh and the castle/princess/knight/pirate area was really cute! It was fun and my kids loved being there and with allll the legos but tbh, I like Tivoli gardens better. I feel like at Tivoli, the amusement park is only part of the beauty of it and so adults get to enjoy it more too. If you can only pick one.....pick the Lego House for sure. If I could pick the perfect trip, I would spend 2 nights at hotel legoland (but get there on the earlier side), enjoy all the wonderful playgrounds, play areas, and spend 2 days at the Lego House before returning to Copenhagen and then go to Tivoli gardens later in the trip for the day. I 100% recommend going out there though if your kids are big lego fans. My older child cried tears of joy. |
Thank you for this! We are a huge lego family. We have visited all the domestic Legolands (Orlando, San Diego, and NY) and this is a dream trip for us. I wonder if you are the poster I discussed lego sorting with lol. My kids are 5, 11, and 13, but the 13 yo is still going strong with legos (my 11 yo will love the Copenhagen part of the trip and is a good sport with the other stuff). Growing up, we had Danish au pairs and Denmark has always been my "bucket list" destination.
What time of year did you go? We are planning a big national park type trip for next summer but wondering if we could do this in March (during our spring break) or if it would be too cold. |
^ Never mind, I see you say you just got back yesterday! |
^ Looks like March is off the table but we will definitely do this trip! Thanks for the play by play |
NP here. Thank you for the post! Do you think older tweens/teens like 14 and 12 would enjoy it? How about other adults? Thinking of DH here who would enjoy Copenhagen but perhaps not as into Legos |
OP here - you definitely need to check the dates if you want to go to the amusement park "Legoland". The Lego House and the Lego resort are still open year-round and those are really the best.
I will say that we seriously lucked out with the weather as it was sunny and on the warmer side (50s-low 60s) and springy the entire week but that is very often NOT the case in March/April. If you want to visit Tivoli Gardens as part of the trip, you also need to check those dates. They are open for the Christmas season (amazing), easter, summer, and I think there's a fall themed time as well but definitely check the dates carefully. It opened for easter on Friday 4/4 and my parents went (without us) and had a delightful time. I definitely prefer Tivoli to Legoland myself but you can't beat the Lego House and hotel. To the person asking about 12 and 14 year olds...I'm not sure! I think my 9 (almost 10 yr old) will like it for at least another few years but I also think that 6 & 9 were perfect ages to go. Lego House is awesome for any age (but of course best if you have kids or an ultra lego fan lol) but the hotel is definitely more geared towards elementary and younger but check out the website. There is other lodging too and I saw a "Lego university" walking back which I haven't looked into at all but I wonder if they have some cool things for older kids??? |
