Trump's tariffs are going to make new cars cost $6k more.

It's funny how all the questions these Republican congress people are getting about the stock market but the discussion should be about the economy not 401k portfolio's.

25% tariffs on Canada/Mexico, 50% tariffs on China/Vietnam. These tariffs are going to make everything unafforable for consumers and put lots of buisnesses that depend on cheap goods from asia overseas.

Tariffs isnt why manufacturing went overseas but the fact a Chinese workers makes $3.50 /hr vs $20 /hr for an American worker. Trump is alsl not factoring in the revenues US firms make overseas selling locally (Build Locally/Sell Locally) - if you do there is no trade defict.

Do we need another Tariff thread?

Your math is wrong too.

Buy American, then.

It’s not that simple. For instance, many car manufacturers build them in US but parts are from overseas. Or a company has some that are built here and others overseas. Trump isn’t doing anything to advance American made products, other than trying to eliminate other options. If enough people decide to buy American with such limited options, supply and demand will drive those prices up too.

The Chinese market has changed dramatically over the past decade. The concept of a car as a rolling computer or smartphone is a reality in the country. In fact, recent entrants include cellphone makers Xiaomi and Huawei.

Not all is lost, as American and foreign car companies are learning what Chinese consumers want. https://www.motorbiscuit.com/more-u-s-cars-built-in-china-2025/

There is not one car that is fully made in America. Not one. There are cars that are assembled in America, but even these are assembled largely from foreign parts.

GM cars contain only 25% parts made in the US or Canada (and the Canadian parts will be subject to tariffs). That’s less than half of Honda, at 57%.

Teslas are majority US, at 69%, but the cheapest Tesla is currently twice the cost of other inexpensive brands. (And tbh this point I would rather have no car, or drive old beaters, than buy a Tesla).

But they are assembled by American workers in America. That's the point. More jobs for Americans, which translates into more taxes paid to the U.S. Government (and state governments too).

President Trump wants to be back in the manufacturing business, rather than just be a consumer-driven economy.

Right, because it’s that easy.

Lord, you MAGA idiots are incapable of critical thought.

You can’t possibly be this obtuse.

Wait, yes you can.

I get your point. But you said “Buy American” as if that were a way to avoid the increased cost of new cars that will result from these tariffs. But if the “domestic” cars are made from foreign parts, all of which are subject to tariffs, it’s not.

Buy used cars. I thought Democrats didn't like consumerism?

Does this mean that my used 2020 Toyota is more valuable than it was last week?

Personally I always have. But I still think these tariffs are idiotic.

Probably, yes.

This is one of the dumbest, most ignorant responses I've seen on this site.
