Using Clear when using a gate pass to escort my 15 yo to gate at IAD?

Anonymous
My 15 yo is flying out of Dulles by himself. I will be getting a gate pass to escort him to the gate.

Has anyone used their Clear (for both of us) in this situation since I don't have a boarding pass, just a gate pass?

I did read my TSA precheck can't be used, so we would use the Clear/non precheck entrance.

This says you can use Clear at DCA with a gate pass. Both airports run by the same agency, so I'll bet it's the same.

I have tried at both dca and iAd and wasn’t allowed at either. Both times were using the gate pass to pick up my unaccompanied minor 12 year old at the gate. The iAd one was right before Christmas, so maybe they’ve changed g things? The dca one was last summer, and I was so frustrated bc based on what I read online, I thought I’d be able to so didn’t budget for the crazy regular tsa lines.
I will say that check the airline. My 15 year old has flown without needing unaccompanied minor on united and Lufthansa, so you might be ok saying goodbye before security?

I wasn't able to at IAD. Do you think a Clear concierge could help because it's possible some people don't know the procedure?

OP here. I am at Dulles now for a flight. The clear guy I talked to said yes but the Clear non precheck downstairs.

Maybe walking the minor to the gate versus picking up at gate is different?

We will see. Of course the problem is whether I can count on it and not build in extra time. Probably not.

Why on earth does a 15 yr old need his mom to walk him to the gate? Special needs?

Yeah that makes some sense- you can't get PreCheck, but you can use Clear.

My experience has been that it is entirely dependent on the person who issues the gate pass. I was taking my kid to the gate for an international flight and the Iberia gate agent added my KTN to my gate pass and I was able to use the TSA line. If they add the KTN to the pass, I don't see why you couldn't use Clear.

Why on earth do you feel that it is your business to ask such a question? People like you are the worst.

My sister is obsessed with using the TSA line so when she was taking my kids to the airport to send them back to me, she would buy a ticket for a flight that day, then once she got through security she canceled the flight (using the 24-hour cancellation rule).

It's a legitimate question. A 15 yr old (barring special needs) who needs mommy to walk him to the gate for a flight is woefully underprepared for life. So many helicopter/snowplow parents. Might you be one?

Why on earth do you think you can post a question and not have people respond in whatever way they see fit? Rather like you did? People like you are the worst.

Because there are a hundred reasons someone might want to accompany their kid to the gate, it's none on your business, and it's not the question being asked. Stick to the topic.

Yup. I know a couple of 15 year olds on the spectrum who are great kids who would probably be fine on an plane by themselves, but navigating an airport to the right gate might end up in them not making it, or having a meltdown. The range of humanity is pretty broad.

not all airlines allow 15 year olds to go unaccompanied minor. Some require age 16
