We adopted a 5 month old puppy from the shelter. They told us she has kennel cough. We bring her home and the cough is scary. We took her to the vet. They said it is kennel cough and said it will get worse before it is better. A week has gone by and it doesn’t seem to get better. Has anyone experienced this? What else should we do? How long does this last? It is our first dog ever and we want to make sure we are doing the right thing. It is scary watching her cough like this. |
I haven't experienced this personally, but my relatives have. Ultimately, the puppy recovered and was totally fine. Hope your pup feels better! I think she will be okay. |
We were in the same situation. We took her to the vet 2 times after the initial diagnosis, and had to switch to a different antibiotic because the first wasn’t helping much. She also had recurrent girardia, which didn't help matters.
She recovered and is a healthy 2-year-old dog now. Wishing you and your pup the best! |
OP here. Thank you all. She was given antibiotics at the shelter and she has finished them a couple of days ago. I will take her back in a week if not improved. Maybe she too will need something stronger or different. |
Poor pup and poor new owners! Just like having a sick baby, it’s scary when a pet is sick because they can’t tell you how they’re really feeling. How your puppy improves soon. |
yes same situation here years ago it lasted an entire month! |
OP here. I hate to hear this put I appreciate it! It reassures me that she is on the right path and that it can take that long. |
Yes. When I adopted my now 2yr old dog he had a really scary cough. I was genuinely afraid he might die. Vet prescribed amoxicillin because he was too small to get doxycycline. Symptoms got worse and there was a visit to emergency vet at 2am for X-ray and er vet added azithromycin. Slowly improved over the next 2-3 weeks and took a month to fully clear up. |
To OP: May God bless you for being so kind & caring. You are a good person. |
