Massachusetts Judge Holds ICE in Contempt

A judge in Boston is holding a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in contempt after he detained a suspect while the man was on trial.

ICE agent Brian Sullivan grabbed Wilson Martell-Lebron last week as he was leaving court for lunch. He was in the middle of a trial for falsifying a drivers license application. Because LeBron was denied to a fair trial the judge had to dismiss the case.

“It's a case of violating a defendant's right to present at trial and confront witnesses against him," Judge Mark Summerville said from the bench. “It couldn't be more serious.”

LeBron’s attorney said “There is no greater injustice in my mind than the government arresting someone, without identifying themselves, and preventing them from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to a jury trial.”

Two district attorneys in Massachusetts sued the federal government in 2019 seeking to prevent arrests at courthouses but dropped the case when former President Joe Biden took office. Who knew the cockroaches would be back.

I hold ICE in contempt too but I'm not sure what good that will do.

I think it will change things if the individuals start being held accountable. Trump may be immune but if Joe Blow ICE agent faces consequences, they may not be so eager to steal people willy nilly and disappear them to foreign prison camps.

I don't remember how immunity works for gov't workers in this sort of situation - can an officer be sent to jail for doing something like this?

Maybe this is exactly why they are wearing masks. The claim it is for fear of retribution from people but maybe it is to escape justice. We all know everyone else will use the amnesia defense. Trump has made forgetfulness and managerial incompetence cool again.

absolutely. The funny part is we had to listen to them drone on about masks and how it's goes against their rights....until they wants to commit crimes.

That sounds right. And I think law enforcement is required to identify itself. And it can’t be legal for law enforcement to act extrajudicially.

I don’t know how they are getting away with not identifying themselves before throwing them in an unmarked windowless van.
