Would you visit England this summer?

Anonymous
We have plans to visit England in July. We made the arrangements in the fall, before Trump was elected. I just read that the EU is urging citizens to stockpile 72 hours worth of supplies due to war risks. This is making me rethink the trip. Would you feel safe going to the UK this summer? I know there are bigger things to worry about but I’m rethinking my plans.

Who do you suppose England is going to be in war against this summer?

I don’t suppose anything. But the EU is urging citizens to stockpile 72 hours worth of supplies due to the situation between Russia and Ukraine.

I would probably still go to England, but wouldn't go anywhere near Russia or Eastern Europe.

I would also make sure you can prove that you are an American citizen and " loyal" to Trump on the way back

We are Democrats. But I don’t think immigration would bother us. If so, I guess I’m stuck in England. It could be worse.

What have you posted in social media or on your phone?

The warning wasn’t due to the risk of actual war. It was related to disruptions related to the war in Ukraine. Things like disruptions to power or other infrastructure. Could that affect the UK? Maybe but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge risk.

72 hours of supplies is not a serious preparation for war, and a recommendation along those lines should not be interpreted as implying that a war is imminent. It's merely a prudent measure against short-term interruptions in utilities, nothing more.

Yes, but the biggest danger for me might be not coming back once I'm back in a civilized country.

It’s not getting stuck in England you need to worry about. It’s getting stuck in a holding tank at Dulles that should concern you.

+1 The shutdown at Heathrow is being investigated as Russian sabotage.

They would love to poke fingers at anyone but themselves

UK power grid is woefully outdated with many components near the end of their useful lives. North Hyde station, serving LHR, is in a area where there has been a very high number of new electricity connection requests driven by new housing developments, data centers, and new commercial investment in Greater London.

Agreed this is the highest actual risk of anything described here. For better or worse if you are a US-born citizen who is white, that risk is lower than for those who don't meet those qualifications.

Where did you read that the EU was advising this stockpile?
