I am a Canadian and am so sad about how our greatest friend and ally for all of these years (world wars, NORAD, 911, Afghanistan), including being a close trading partner, wants to change the relationship. Canadians have so many colleagues, coworkers, friends, and family in the US. We respect each other, and have so much in common, although we are funnier ![]() |
Annexing is a non-starter.
President Trump’s re-negotiation of NAFTA between 2016 and 2020 was a fair rebalancing of a worthwhile agreement. The threat of tariffs can be productive, though not the tariffs themselves. Hopefully we can once again come to a mutually-beneficial arrangement. |
Wasn’t Canada just hit with retaliatory tariffs by China, after Canada placed tariffs on Chinese goods last Fall? (before the U.S. or Canadian elections took place). |
Tariffs should be even steven. Why not? |
Take heart, my friend! Most Americans do not support tariffs and annexation |
OP here. Doesn’t that debunk some of the Republican theories that Canada is being overtaken by the Chinese then? China is not our ally. You are. Why are you placing 25% or more on our commodities, including food, when we are friends? This is your government’s doing. |

If you are such a keen observer of US politics and policies, why are you asking this question here as if we have anything to do with this or any control? |
I don’t know a single American who supports this. We are ashamed of this administration. We are protesting, writing our representatives, and being loud about our anger. I’m very sorry and so embarrassed of what a trainwreck we’ve become in less than 100 days. |
Are you really that dumb? You vote for this stuff. You have a voice. Why are you not more engaged with world geopolitics? Your country depends on other countries to prosper economically. |
Embarrassed and ashamed that bullying allies has become our foreign policy position. Makes me ill to think about. |
None of the localities in the DC area went for Trump. You are asking us why people we disagree with made bad decisions. (Answer: several bad reasons, the nicest of which is ignorance.) |
We don't. I'm just across the river from you and tariffs might cost me my job. I love to see your politicians informing my Dear Orange Leader about all the stuff you sell us that my purple state needs to keep functioning. We wouldn't have affordable heat or light without you. I hope we will be collectively forgiven when my state's voters and other Americans get a chance to repair the damage they did in 2024. But first they have to experience the consequences. Elon goes first in the FAFO Olympics. |
I'm French. We sent Lafayette over to help them gain independence from the British, who stayed in American for years and helped George Washington significantly with his war leadership and strategy... and we get called traitors when Chirac refuses to participate in Bush's oil wars. Congress even renamed their "French fries" "freedom fries", because they're so dumb they don't even know fries are Belgian.
You should never expect any loyalty from the US, Canadian OP. |
I remember. Canada refused to be part of those wars as well. |
