Not a direct college post, but does anyone have a dc who went to a military academy summer leadership program?

What are they like?

Dc is interested in an academy for college but also looking at regular colleges. I’m hoping this summer conference could help dc decide

Yes, if your child gets in, it’s a good opportunity to see what cadet life is like. Be aware that it’s usually run by the least accomplished current cadets. It’s kind of a punishment summer activity.

Not sure what other service academies offer, but USNA has a summer seminar that's quite popular and competitive. https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Programs/NASS.php#fndtn-panel1-Steps-For

That’s interesting. Why is it punishment?

It's not. It's a choice some of them (rising sophomores) make.

My DS is attending a USNA seminar in June. Looking forward to it.

Close friend has a son who did the summer West Point experience. It was tough and what you’d expect from an army experience but he loved it and knew he wanted to apply after that summer.

Thanks, this is helpful info. What sort of school environment was he coming from? Do you know if it was tough physically or mentally or both? I think my dc will like any physical rigor, but I’m curious how he’ll take the rest. He’s already in a very strict environment so I’m hoping it’s not too much of a shock for him

Can you share what it was like? Was it tough physically? I posted above. I think my dc will love that, but I’m not sure what else is involved

I did the West Point experience 30 years ago. Not sure how much it has changed, but back then it was fun and tough. I was a high school varsity athlete, but wasn't used to running everyday. We did standard Army PT in the early mornings including a daily 2 mile run. Had academic classes, ate in the mess hall, got to experience a taste of West Point life. I was completely uninterested in the military beforehand (signed up because I was invited based on my PSATs via a letter in the mail and it was free), but really enjoyed the competitive toughness of the experience and considered applying to West Point after. I never did join the military. For me it was exhausting in the best way. They didn't haze us, nothing to be afraid of, just hard work physically and academically.

Both DCs did navy summer seminar. If your DC does a sport, they will be fine They do some runs and pt, but nothing as hard as actual plebe summer. There's a day where they yell at you to give the high schoolers a taste of what plebe summer is like, but for the most part, it is a lot of learning about what the academy has to offer in regards to academics and what daily life is like To add, in order to be a summer seminar detailer, you have to be top of your class. Not sure what pp was talking about The administration does not let the lowest of preformers anywhere near potential recruits

I hope your son enjoys his seminar.

Nobody asks for this summer position, trust me. There are tons of more sought after summer assignments and only those with the lowest academic/military/PT scores end up doing it as a cadet.
