DC Budget In Peril - Should Bowser/DC Give In?

Anonymous
The authority to spend $1 billion of its own money versus 7 things the GOP wants.

The 1 billion cut may seem remote to you but what it means in real life is extreme. I’m at a school and we have to turn in budgets showing 10% of staff and other expense cuts starting in April. Police fire and other services to be hit too.

The seven things include - banning noncitizen voting, banning ranked choice, no city services for undocumented residents, taking power away from DC’s AG and giving it to Trump's appointed US Attorney, being able to prosecute all DC youth as adults, directly nominating DC judges.

No. Once you start giving up any of your autonomy freely, you’ve lost. Next year you will up more, until you have nothing left.

Wait, the Republicans want to get rid of ranked choice voting in DC? Isn't that the best bet for getting more moderates and fewer loopy progressives on the Council .
Anonymous
Yeah, eff this dweebus and the rest of the unf#ckable Heritage Foundation eunuchs:

The ranked choice voting one is just illogical. That’s how you actually get more moderates on the City Council. I suppose Republicans prefer leftists on the Council so they have a boogeyman to rail against.

No, they should not give in.

Do not give in. The legal ones are absolutely shockingly bad.

I don't think she should preemptively give in just to appease some dude from Heritage, no. Probably better to focus on what actual GOP leaders in the actual House want, since the White House says they want the (bipartisan) Senate fix to the budget passed, so there's a decent chance they get this resolved without any additional concessions.

What if your kid's school closes in May because there is no April per pupil funding payment? Or can't reopen in the fall? Or has 20% less teachers and staff even if it does reopen? What if your house is on fire and it takes twice as long for firefighters to get there because they are on a hiring freeze?

I get the "NO" just want to understand what people are willing to sacrifice and when we are going to have more people saying "hell no" out loud.

They will just demand more concessions next year

It’s not a question of whether DC should do anything. It’s being forced. The leverage is too strong to resist.

That said, the ranked choice voting stands out on that list as something that is already a detriment to the far left. Only guess I have there is that without ranked choice voting DC is unlikely to produce any politicians strong enough to hold higher office? DCs pipeline hardly seems big enough for that possibility to strike fear in anyone but maybe they want to force us to just keep grooming buffoons like the ones we make for the council and AG now.

What's not accurate? That there are those pushing for riders to go along with fixing the budget or that the President is or is not supportive of a fix? We've heard the President wants it fixed for a few weeks. A vote still has not been scheduled. Do you believe they are just doing nothing or do you believe they are negotiating concessions?

I admit I simply don't know. Still I would have expected with the President's urging this would have been fixed already.
