| DC got into Cornell and GTech for engineering....wondering what/how to select....GTech is OOS for us....is Cornell worth over GTech in general especially considering the cost difference....anyone went through the same dilemma...thoughts pls |
| What is the cost difference? |
| No comparison. |
| Both have strong engineering schools. Choose one depending on your DC's preference. |
| Daughter graduated from Cornell engineering. In CS, expect large classes, difficulty getting onto project teams, and challenges getting close to professors or doing research. Too many CS majors. Focus is on research and the PhD students. A ton of work for the students; 4 years of grind and no time for fun. Unimpressed by placement office. Could have same problems at any top research-oriented CS department such as Georgia Tech? |
Daughter also graduated from Cornell Engineering. The classes are large but there is tons of support from TAs. DD enjoyed being on a project team all 4 years. Some are more competitive than others. She worked hard but also had fun. Loved the campus and walks in the arboretum. Graduated in 3.5 years and in working for a tech firm in CA...earning more than I do! I do not know much about GT. DD definitely wanted to go North. |

GA Tech is in Atlanta (incredible city) and has big time sports. I think a lot of kids do internships. Back in my day (90s) a lot of kids interned and took five years - many of them were in state.
Cornell has Ivy League prestige. Ithaca is gray and pretty remote, though you can do worse. Cornell interacts with non-engineering students. GA Tech has other programs but they are largely an after-thought. |
+1 |
| Don’t know much about Cornell but GA Tech is in a vibrant city, near lots of job and internship opportunities and not far from Emory and UGA. Better weather and in a major transportation hub. Both are great schools for STEM- it may come down to what’s a better social/lifestyle fit for your kid. Congrats!! |
| I think both are great schools so it should come down to where your kid decides is the best fit for them. You really can’t go wrong academically |
| I would go with Ga Tech, it’s better rated for most engineering majors and not in Ithaca. |
| We were just at GT. Atlanta is a great area full of culture for any of your interests. It really appealed to my DD. |
Totally agree except UGA is over an hour away. Otherwise spot on. |
| GTech ~ 60k, Cornell ~ 95k (including everything) |
Absolutely not. People make fun of Cornell. |
