I know Jeff and others have already commented on the 8 women sent along with the alleged Tren de Aragua gang members to a Salvadoran maximum-security mega-prison, a place that Amnesty Intl, Human Rights Watch and the UN have raised serious concerns about, due to reports of torture. But I feel like it deserves its own thread. Every day brings more news of the Administration's incompetence, corruption, law-breaking, and callous indifference to the lives of ordinary people. But when did we cross over into the darkest side of openly endorsing human rights abuses??? Outsourcing abuse is ethically equal to committing it. Who thought it was a good idea to send women to CECOT??? What were they imagining would happen to them? Let’s just all take a step back and reflect on the fact that President Bukele thought the US went too far, that his pride and joy prison was not appropriate for women. He also thought that a Nicaraguan is not the same as a Venezuelan (are we just counting syllables here? How do you get these confused?). Bukele – who himself does not care about due process, who has created policies that encourage the routine rounding up and jailing of innocent people to meet quotas – this guy, thinks that Americans are incompetent and worse, and sent people back! Everyone should take stock and contemplate how low we have sunk. |
I hope Bukele sends back the gay Venezuelan makeup artist who was deported, it seems, solely due to his tattoos. I can’t imagine he will fare well in that prison.
