MCPS Gradebook not Adding Up

Anonymous
One of my kid's grades dropped, and I checked the grades for the individual assignments in gradebook, and they average to a higher grade than shown at the bottom of the Gradebook for this class.

What could explain this? I used the same weights for each assignment that were in Gradebook, but it's not adding up...if the individual assignment grades are correct, my kid's grade should be higher...

Email the teacher would be a good idea.

Check the categories. Something may have been intended as All Tasks, but ended up coded as Practice/Prep.

Check your math. Most likely it's your math, second possibility is there is an assignment that accidentally got marked private, one accidental click has done it for me.

Did you separate out the categories? AT is really the only one that moves the grade.

Oh look another day another complain in MCPS about awful platform or the ones entering the grades. Parents should not need to be so involved if grades were entered regularly and synched regularly so parents AND students could see them regularly. Sigh.

I dunno. Somehow we survived with no 24/7 access.

This is why when I taught in MCPS I only entered grades on Friday. Otherwise I spent all my work week answering emails.

There is a district assessment in the form of a progress check that is going in this quarter for all students. It counts for 10% of their quarter grade. Maybe that's what it is.

Handed in late? Points deducted?

That's what teachers are not doing. Pick a damn day or two and get those in AND synched.

Doesn’t the gradebook automatically calculate after grades are entered? If my understanding is correct then this is likely a math error on your part. As a PP suggested you might not be figuring in a points deduction for untimely work which would explain the difference. Or it could be something else.

What I’d do is have my child look into it with their teacher if they can’t explain the calculations.

Some district assessments haven't been given in classrooms yet but should be by end of this week. Expect those to be entered by this week or if next Monday is the day for teachers to enter in grades for Q3. There are teachers who do not enter grades regularly.

Let's say, hypothetically of course, that a student contacts their teacher to ask if they can go over the particular assignment, teacher doesn't respond or teacher says come this time/day and when student replies sure, the teacher says they can't meet at that time (can't stay after school, or can't do it at lunch). Student asks teacher then when next. Teacher doesn't reply because of course that teacher is "very busy." Student tries in class but there's a long line of students needing to ask same thing. It is not just ONE student with the question or needing clarification. Sounds like a problem with that teacher.
