How is this a good idea? And why would you discourage people from paying taxes? I thought we were trying to increase revenues to cut down the debt limit? Can someone explain the upside to me here? It seems like yet another invasion of private data by Trump’s cronies

The data is already there. It’s about deporting people who have paid taxes for years and decades, hoping it might help them gain citizenship. The ultra wealthy don’t care about the money. |
It's sickening. An illegal violation of privacy. They are coming after your data next. Don't think immigrants are the only ones they are going to target. |
No, that's not true. People pay taxes because they can't become citizens if they have lived in the US but have not paid taxes. Just paying taxes has nothing to do with gaining citizenship. Unless you're extremely wealthy and can buy a golden ticket to citizenship from the Trump regime. |
You're dumb and contribute nothing to the discourse. Please go away, grow up, do some reading, and come back when you have a clue. |
What are you even talking about? What reading should I do? |
But all the MAGAs on here told me illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes. |
Help them gain citizenship = if congress ever managed to pass comprehensive immigration reform, which is never going to happen now, having paid taxes would be a benefit in an application towards permanent residency or citizenship, not deciding factor. So yes, it is true. |
It’s another way to find people living here that should not be. Why is this a problem? |
Taking all their SS# money. |
The illegals I work with don’t pay taxes. They get paid u see the table or in someone else’s name, then they get a cut from that person. They are going about this the wrong way.
Only a person on the correct legal path to citizenship is using an ATIN/ITIN. |
It is a stupid policy because it will reduce the tax revenue the government collects. It might be helpful for immigration enforcement, but it will cost the government billions in tax revenue. People will not file tax returns if the data can be used against them to assist with deportation. |
Why do you work for a criminal? |
This isn't true. I know people IRL who are undocumented who use tax id numbers rather than social security numbers and pay federal taxes and social security taxes - the later despite not being eligible to ever receive the SS money they pay in. I have no idea the percentage of people working under the table to those using tax id numbers, but one of the many reasons that the IRS is not supposed to share info with any other government agencies without a warrant is that they want as many people as possible to pay taxes. This is bad news for revenue collection and will drive a lot of people to under the table pay. It will be a big loss for revenue collection. |
I work for a hospital?? |
