I am not trying to spark a debate, nor am I a dog owner or enthusiast. I do however know people close to the situation, as well as friends who were close by. As i've learned more regarding both the incident and the dog itself, I feel the need to share this link with you all. Without getting into the details, I do urge you to sign this petition. Regardless of your views on dogs, political affliation, race, class, etc., the fact that a D.C. police officer fired his weapon several times in broad day light during a busy festival and is STILL on active duty surely is troubling to all. Many of us are raising children in the city, and even more of us are trying to make D.C. a better place. Shedding our reputation as a trigger happy town wrapped in red tape isn't easy when police officers fire weapons (during events with families in attendence no less) in public and remain on active duty with no investigation by the department. I'm not calling for the lynching of the officer, but simply some accountability from the MPD. Thanks for you time! You can also email your concerns-DC Chief of Police: Chief Lanier: cathy.lanier@dc.gov or Commander Kishter: Jacob.Kishter@dc.gov. |
How do we know it wasn't warranted? I'd rather have a dog get shot than let it have the opportunity to attack someone. |
The petition is for there to be a transparent and quick investigation. If it was warranted it will brought to light. If it wasn't, there will be reprecussions. Isn't that what all parents would want? |
As a dog owner, you need to be able to control your dog at all times in any situation. Also, people need to realize dogs are dogs and not people, yes it is sad the dog got shot but let's not foret the dog attacked in a crowded place, |
"The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department needs to investigate Parrot's shooting and take appropriate action against the officer. They also need to prevent future tragic canine-police encounters by establishing non-lethal force continuums for handling animals and mandatory canine behavior training."
Say what? Every dog in the city takes a canine behavior training class? That sounds like legislation to enrich dog trainers. & seriously, police officers need to have a lethal force option with respect to dogs. They sometimes attack and they are not more valuable than people. |
I think the point of the (poorly worded) quote is that the POLICE will take mandatory canine behavior training. Not to import mayoral politics into this, but I think a large number of the people in the city will look at this petition and this issue and wonder, "How many of the people getting all hot and bothered abotu the dead dog are up in arms when a black teenager gets shot in the non-NW quadrants of the city. First dog parks, then investigatiosn into the shooting of a dog? WTF?" And they'll be right. |
Like the previous poster pointed out, I think the point the threadstarter was trying to make is the police should investigate whether this was warranted or not. In regards to a "black teenager getting shot", think about this- the police report was posted online and no officers(or anyone) else were bitten, no officers were treated for injuries. The large majority of accounts of witnesses who responded to online news articles claim the dog scuffle was extremely short, broken up, and the dog was laying on the calmly laying on the sidewalk being stroked by his owner when the police officer knocked the owner off, choked the dog, picked it up by it's neck, threw it down some stairs and shot it. Now think of teenage boys of ANY race being teenagers-playfighting, running around, being loud, acting like knuckleheads in public. We see it in NW,SE, Silver Spring, Arlington, anywhere. Would the police break up a high school fight by shooting the kids? Or pin a teenager down by their neck, then throw them down the stairs? Physically attack teenagers running around loudly in public? Perhaps this officer would... My point is it's not so much about the dog or teenagers(you obviously can't compare the value of life between the two), but the POLICE. We entrust so much in them, we raise our children to respect them. I certainly respect police officers to the highest extent. However, if what witnesses say is true(or even close to the truth), how can we trust the officer around our kids? If I take DD to the park and a dog scuffle at the dog play area breaks out, are police going to come through with guns blazing? I don't want my family to witness something like that. |
By saying "investigation and take appropriate action against the officer" clearly sends the message that anyone who signs this petition believes action agains the officer is warranted, which, in turn means that signers believe that the officer is guilty. If the petition simply requested a full investigation, then one might be able to say that the purpose of this petition is for a quick and transparent investigation. But, to call a petition that demands "appropriate action against the officer" a request for quick and transparent investigation is disingenuous. |
I'm tired of these. It comes up every year. Some big dog attacks someone or another dog, an officer intervenes, the dog is shot, and the owner says "my dog wouldn't hurt a fly. Where is the police restraint?" And the answer is inevitably the same - a big, off leash dog is charging and there is no time to give an obedience test in the few seconds before the officer must act. |
Threadstarter here- I didn't want to spawn a debate. Or get caught up in the semantics of the petition. It calls for an investigation and appropriate action. If the officer is absolved after a good investigation, then so be it. If he is punished, he is punished. Many police departments put an officer on leave for a few days after she or he fires a weapon so they can look into it. I believe DC does the same if fired at or around people, and other circumstances. Regardless, there were witnesses all over the place. There's plenty of statements to comb through. Maybe the officer was right. But he wasn't, it sets a horrible precedent for other officers in DC. There were people on the sidewalk, street, and on restaurant rooftops right above-what if the bullet ricocheted the wrong way?
Everyone has the right to their opinion, and I respect that. But this is about the facts of the situation coming to light. Thanks for you time though. I'll leave you with a few facts relating to some posts here Fact-The dog was leashed. Fact-The owner/foster did have the dog under control when the police arrived. Fact- The dog never charged any humans. Fact- Officers didn't arrive at a crazy dog fight or a situation where a dog was running around attacking people. They arrived to the dog laying on the sidewalk, with the owner massaging it's mouth to calm him. The scuffle was over. |
If an investigation determined that officers arrived to find a crazed dog that was a danger to people in the area, the appropriate action toward the officer might be a letter of commendation. I have no comment on whether this is likely to be the case, but I just want to point out that appropriate action doesn't have to be negative. |
The text of the petition makes the assertion that the shooting was unnecessary. It also makes the assertion that the dog was contained and that it was not a threat. |
Wow. No you fail at analogy. And this is what happened . And the other dog in the fight was torn open and its leg was badly broken. The dog was shot. It is sad but it was a. dog. A pit bull no less. Bet you don't have those roaming through your community. |
