Heathrow closure - Friday 21 Mar 2025
Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23:59 on 21 March. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience. |
Ugh. Presumably planes due to leave IAD for LHR on Friday night may be stuck in UK? |
Plane wouldn't leave Friday night unless they were sure the airport would be open on Saturday morning. I'd be more concerned about the flight being cancelled altogether. Maybe scope out other routes with tickets if you need to switch |
At IAD right now and still waiting for them to officially cancel our flight to London. It obviously isn’t going tonight |
Sorry to hear that— good luck! (Might be worth getting on the phone now to rebook?) |
Doesn't really matter at this point- there aren't any more flights tonight. Not getting there before Saturday morning |
United 7 PM flight took off and turned around, coming back to Dulles. Virgin 9:30 flight same outcome- took off, turned around, coming back. BA 7 PM flight same also. Rough night, I'll bet 20-25:flights in the air from various airports and had to turn back?
|
I think I read it handles about 1,300 flights per day. Ugh. |
Yep, stuck on the plane in dulles. They would let us off the plane but not out the airport.all flights being diverted or turned back. Some diverted to halifax, Germany, etc. absolute scenes. |
Nope, hundreds of flights diverted/turned back… |
Waiting for them to officially cancel so i can try to rebook. They aren’t answering any phones |
Good call- forgot just how many flights there are overnight to Heathrow. Happened at a rough time- if it had been around 6 PM east coast time most of those flights could have just cancelled. But not happening until 10 PM east coast meant most were in the air. Over 120 flights diverting/turning back. https://bsky.app/profile/flightradar24.com/post/3lkucboiwpk23 |
I'd get yourself to Paris or Belgium or Frankfurt on a flight tomorrow- wouldn't necessarily count on Heathrow being open on Saturday if they already closed it all of Friday. Then either train over or connect to London City or Gatwick/Stansted/Luton. But gonna be tough, those connector flights gonna book up quick, there is so much volume to LHR. |
Yes, I am wondering if I just buy myself a ticket on a direct flight tomorrow, and I don’t bother waiting to rebook? |
Maybe I will wait another 20 minutes. There are lots of flights to dublin from the US, so i can still get there tomorrow |
