Kids who threaten schools

Anonymous
Parkland went into a shelter in place for an hour on Monday. A nearby elementary school also had to go into shelter in place because of someone who called and threatened to shoot up the school. Our principal sent out an email saying that after investigation they found that it was a student from another school and it was an idle threat. A few weeks ago there was another incident where a Loiderman student was thought to have brought a gun and a staff member was on the buses checking which bus that kid was on (Loiderman and Parkland kids are on same bus). I just hope it wasn't the same kid who called and threatened.

Just why would kids do this? Waste of so many resources.

This is the communication we received and I think the Principal handled it well. My kid didn't even know something had happened.

Dear Parkland Community,
This message is to provide additional information related to the community letter that was sent on
Monday, March 17. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time while Montgomery
County Police were investigating the phone call that caused Parkland and Brookhaven Elementary
School to enter into shelter-in-place this past Monday. We were informed by Montgomery County Police
and the MCPS Office of School Security and Emergency Management that they were able to identify the
caller as an MCPS student from another school and Montgomery County Police can confirm there is no
validity to the threat. Montgomery County Police and the other MCPS school that the student attends
will work collaboratively to respond to the incident.
I would like to thank Montgomery County Police, MCPS Office of School Security and Emergency
Management, and the Parkland staff for their efforts to keep our students and staff safe. I am grateful for
the support and the speedy response from many people who truly demonstrated the importance of
keeping our students and staff safe. Thank you families for your continued support and please do not
hesitate to contact me at 240-740-6800 or Aaron_K_Shin@mcpsmd.org if you have any questions.

Dear Parkland Community,
This message is to provide more information regarding the decision to go into shelter-in-place earlier
today. Around 11:00 am, our main office staff received two phone calls from a blocked number. The first
phone call used profanity towards the main office staff member and then hung up. One minute later,
another phone call from a blocked number was received where the voice said they were going to “shoot
up the school.” As a result, the main office staff member immediately contacted school administration
and school administration was able to quickly enact safety responses which included contacting 911,
ensuring all exterior doors were locked, bringing outdoor classes like PE back into the building, and
contacting central office and the MCPS Office of School Security and Emergency Management. Out of
an abundance of safety, we went into a shelter-in-place and also contacted Brookhaven Elementary
School who also went into a shelter-in-place.
During this time, normal day-to-day school operations continued while we were collaborating with
Montgomery County Police and the MCPS Office of School Security and Emergency Management.
After consultation, the shelter-in-place response was lifted around 12:25 pm. The safety of our students
and staff will always be the top priority and we will continue to work with our school administration and
security team as well as our MCPS and local community partners to ensure the safety of our students
and staff at Parkland and Brookhaven Elementary School. Thank you families for your continued
support and please do not hesitate to contact me at 240-740-6800 or Aaron_K_Shin@mcpsmd.org if you
have any questions."

I personally think that any kid who threatens mass violence at a school should never, ever be allowed in a school building again if they are in 3rd or 4th grade on up. And younger kids should immediately be transferred to a high security therapeutic school. I'm a teacher and I'm OVER being threatened and assaulted. There are some states that are now changing the behavior codes. I'm all for that

Absolutely couldn't agree more.

+1
Automatic expulsion from all Maryland schools.

So did they scrap the plan of letting go the new teachers who opened their blabber mouths when they see something. 10 years ago if this got out the teacher witch hunt would have been massive but since then so many teachers have been churned and burned the system is crumbling. It's hilarious if it wasn't so tragic.

^. DP. No wonder there's a teacher shortage.

Agreed. I'm a middle school teacher whose school had Montgomery County police show up, guns and rifles drawn, during school hours, for what turned out to be a false-alarm threat. You can imagine what the students outside on the field during PE thought when the field was descended upon by police with rifles out.

I work at a middle school and agree that if there is proof that someone threatens the school in any capacity, it should be automatic expulsion. I have had students bring guns and knives to school and they return from a 10 day out of school suspension. It is mind boggling to me.

Well, they did arrest the kid, and charged him as a juvenile. No word on whether he’ll be expelled on top of whatever sentence they give him.

How does a 13 year old think this is a fine prank? No repercussions at home?

As a Parkland parent, I am worried that cell signal is very spotty inside the school. How do the kids even contact their parents in case of an emergency?

Is this a local middle school? If so that’s crazy.

Because kids are still growing, their brains aren't fully developed, and some are trying to get out of a test or a paper due, or want to mess with a friend at another school. You really want expulsion for a 9-10 year old (3rd/4th grade)?

Kids of all ages need more mental health support, and we need more special ed teachers (pay them MORE for the increased workload with all the extra paperwork along with their regular teacher duties), and more discrete classrooms. LRE (least restrictive environment) has gone too far in the other direction, as many kids need smaller class size and extra attention.

Yes, expulsion from any kind of gen Ed school or a sped program within a gen Ed school. Those younger kids can go to therapeutic schools. Or their parents can homeschool them. I'm a teacher of very young children and I am over being hit, kicked, bit, pushed, threatened, etc. OVER IT As an employee, I have a right to be safe. My other students have a right to be safe. As things stand, we are NOT safe. I do not care if kids are 5 years old. Throwing scissors at a teacher is not the behavior of a child that belongs in any kind of a gen Ed or sped within a gen Ed school setting. Period.

Yes, if a child is behaving poorly they should be expelled or sent to a specialized school. How about parents step up, this isn't just mental health support.
