I’m horrified — but not surprised. Well, I’m surprised that this came so quickly, and I’m startled that I haven’t seen the kind of public pushback that I would hope to see. At the moment, this is probably mostly symbolic — but a very clear indication of what Trump’s priorities will include.
I hope Chief Justice Roberts is having trouble sleeping. This is now his legacy. https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2025-03-18/trump-administration-removes-ban-on-segregated-facilities-in-federal-contracts |
When I saw this, I just started shaking and crying. This is even worse than taking Jackie Robinson off that website (which also made me cry.). I just feel SO bad for people of color right now. I’m an ally, I support BLM, and I don’t want them to hate me because I’m the same color as Trump (white, not orange). I don’t understand why he can be so cruel. Or why so many voters are motivated by racism and hate for skin color. |
This is so unbelievably vile. What possible reason could anyone have for supporting this?? |
I worry for my colleagues, who are minorities. WTF! |
You mean beyond racism? Hatefulness? Evil? Remember that Trump and Musk both have had the experience of being wealthy white males in racially segregated societies. This is part of their “Great Again”. Funny that people who screech about “merit” often do so much to ensure that the playing fields will never be anything close to level. |
At this point, the two parties are basically in a race war. At least Democrats still have some goodwhites. But the parties are starting to segregate big time on race (and gender) lines. |
Affirmative action excesses pushed some white moderates into the evil camp. Block a man from getting hired or promoted, and you risk radicalizing him. Block a kid from getting into college, an you risk radicalizing his mother. |
It’s hard, sometimes, for me to realize how many people— especially in this area — have no idea how close we are both in practice and in time to legal racial segregation.
People may not realize that everything from the community swimming clubs in the DC suburbs to the DC Native habit of asking what local high school you attended can be directly traced to ways that DC historically functioned as a legally segregated federal city. Trump wants to take us back to that. |
I don't you can blame tiger moms for the government removing anti-discrimination clauses in federal contracting. Seems rather systematic. |
Please say more about that! “Block” in what way? Are you assuming that the man who didn’t get promoted or the kid who didn’t get into college some how earned or deserved it more than those who did? Let’s hear about the data and actual documented practices— instead of vague grievances and resentments. |
I do think that some of the Republicans do want a race war. DC — without representation in Congress or the resources of a state — is a potentially attractive and vulnerable target. |
This is very true. I went to a show at the Newseum several years back and saw a photo essay of civil rights protesters being assaulted by whites. The photo was dated 1965 and I was startled to realize that it was just 5 years before I was born. Our progress is substantial but clearly more fragile than we might imagine. |
Very fragile. This, more than anything, will be the cause of a new civil war. |
No, he removed the ban FROM federal contracts. The ban on segregation is still in the civil rights act and will be enforced. Just no specific language in the contracts regarding this. |
