Hiring freeze in academia

The University of California, employer of over 230,000 faculty and staff, has announced a hiring freeze across its 10 campus system in response to the current political climate of seeking to “settle scores” and hobble certain academic and government institutions.

Anyone who has studied history knows that the settling scores part is going to accomplish very little in the near term but cost dearly in the long term. Having to walk an extra 25 feet to get to a class you rarely attended in person anyway is going to seem like the good ol’ days.

Stanford University, MIT, Northwestern University, Cornell University, University of Notre Dame, Emory University, University of Washington, and North Carolina State University are among other institutions that have announced either full or partial hiring freezes. You should expect more to follow suit.

Most of the research, including in basic science, biomedicine, clinical trials, etc, is conducted at universities. There’d be no new treatments or drugs without them. Over 170 US Nobel laureates, most of whom are at US research universities, have received NIH funding.

Don't worry, all the major research universities are rescinding admissions to incoming PhD students, due to uncertainty and lack of grant funds. No more younger generations of scientists here.

Yes, it is critical that universities prioritize the excessive pensions of their many, many administrators over all else!

Many other research universities have announced hiring freezes - both public and private.
