I'm quite confused about these so I'd rather ask anonymously my questions! I am training for a 10k and feeling very nervous, especially with my training plan getting me up to 9 mile runs. The most I've done is 7 miles. I run in the AM before I've eaten or drank anything.
When should I eat the gel? Before the run? In the middle? I don't want to look dumb on the trail, should I stop my watch and pull off the trail? Eat it while running? Any flavors to try? I have an 8 miler this weekend, and I know REI sells them in person so I was going to stop there on Friday. What works for you as you increased mileage? Thanks in advance for any tips! |
I follow some runners online. They said that nerds gummies clusters are a better and more affordable replacement to the gels.

Raisins are even better |
I've tried most of the brands and most of the flavors. Honey stingers are my favorite. You should go to REI- they have a great selection. I would also try the clif beans (jelly beans) and the clif bloks- they are awesome. The benefit of these is that you don't have to stop running to eat them. |
Honestly I don’t think you need a gel for nine miles. You’re better off just having a piece of toast before. If you must, eat the gel halfway through the run. Stop for a few minutes so you don’t choke. A shot block I find nicer than a gel, it’s more like a gummy bear. Start with a bland flavor like vanilla for the gel. Drink water when you eat either. There’s nothing magic about a gel, it’s just an easier way to get calories versus carrying actual food. Which is why for nine miles I’d rather just eat before and after. |
Thank you all for the advice! |
