Top 5 Great ECs (captain, president of 2 clubs, seal of Biliteracy, tons of awards at varsity level (but not recruitable), works part time, 300 ssl hours, strong recommendations In at honors program at MD, penn state, USD, BU with scholarships. Deferred Harvard, Michigan UPenn. TO Applied RD because school wasn’t on radar but then became a favorite after visiting a friend. A lot of effort put into essay. She is very upset and confused as I am! |
| Doesn’t Miami require a test? |
|
They probably don't expect her to attend.
Is Miami a strong contender? Her safety? If waitlisted, do you know the school-specific hacks for how to get off the waitlist? Start asking Ohio people. |
| Is this a prior year ? |
| Miami’s acceptance rate is under 20%. Why are you surprised? |
U Miami is FL. Miami U is OH and typically referred to as Miami of Ohio. |
PP. OK, start asking Florida people. Same point, different state. |
| Less than 15% of their students have higher than 3.75 gpa. |
| Why did she go TO? UMiami scores aren’t that crazy high? It’s odd for a 4.0 kid who is top 5 to NOT have a score. |

I think U of Miami must be playing the yield game. Thats very high stats for U of Miami. DS with close to the same stats but with a strong SAT was accepted 2 years ago but offered no merit. We were surprised since we know lots of kids with considerably lower stats who got lots of merit. I had to conclude they didn’t think he’d come.
To the PP who mentioned acceptance rate, it’s really not that great of a metric. For example, if 100 students apply to a program and the program takes 20, it doesn’t tell you the quality of the other 80 applicants. Maybe 40 of those were huge reaches and never stood a chance. I know U of Chicago does massive marketing to increase apps and decrease acceptance rate. I guarantee that results in not remotely competitive kids submitting apps. They marketed heavily to my DD who didn’t stand a chance. Keep in mind U of Miami is very popular due to location and especially with the international community which drives up application numbers. |

That’s not how this works. Kids self select where they think they’ll be competitive, so you don’t see applicant pools full of huge reaches. You’re just underestimating how competitive Miami is. https://admissions.miami.edu/undergraduate/about/class-profile/index.html |
| What percentage that applied TO were accepted? How many B’s on your DC’s transcript? If their average is 3.8UW then more than one or two B’s and you were below average. Your problem is probably that you applied TO and unless you also had all A’s it wasn’t going to be an admit. |

They fill a lot of their class through both EA and ED. So actually waiting until RD could have impacted the application.
Even if grades were great, what if they filled their “bucket” from that high school or county for example? I will say that last year UM received 56,000 applications and accepted 8800 or so. This year they expect well over 60,000 and likely will accept 8000-8800. Just a heads up. (You can find many of these numbers in their CDS or admissions website.) |

Those ECs seem ok, not great by any means so I am curious why the schools like Harvard and UPenn even gave this kid a deferral. The test was high enough for those two schools to defer— why wouldn’t it be submitted to U Miami?
