For example, if 100 students apply to a program and the program takes 20, it doesn’t tell you the quality of the other 80 applicants. Maybe 40 of those were huge reaches and never stood a chance. I know U of Chicago does massive marketing to increase apps and decrease acceptance rate. I guarantee that results in not remotely competitive kids submitting apps. They marketed heavily to my DD who didn’t stand a chance. Keep in mind U of Miami is very popular due to location and especially with the international community which drives up application numbers. That’s not how this works. Kids self select where they think they’ll be competitive, so you don’t see applicant pools full of huge reaches.
