why all the fuss about living on the West side of 270? Is the East side all that bad?

The difference between East and West of 270 in Rockville are simply the schools typically are better on the west because they feed into Wootton rather than Richard Montgomery. In my opinion, there is no difference in school quality a little more south as Bethesda is on one side and Potomac on the other - so they are pretty much equal; however, you get larger lots in Potomac (west of 270), then Bethesda (east of 270). In Gaithersburg / Germantown, I cannot tell you what the differences are. |

I live in Wooten and thought Richard Montgomery was better rated. Gaithersburg HS and Northwest are ranked poorly but not RM. |

I think schools are the main thing, too. If the schools have a bad reputation in a particular area, the housing prices are much cheaper. There also seem to be more apartments and townhouses on the East side of 270.
On the east side, I'd live in North Bethesda, Washington Grove, parts of Gaithersburg, Rockvillle proper (20850), and Clarksburg. Germantown is a little harder to figure out as the crime rates and school quality vary dramatically by neighborhood. |
