Looking to restock my freezer with homemade food. Any recommendations for things that freeze well beyond soups and slice-and-bake cookies are very welcome! I'd also love tips for how you wrapped things to prevent freezer burn.
Thanks in advance! |
| I like to freeze pumpkin and zucchini bread, meatballs, homemade egg bites, baked cupcakes (to defrost and thaw) mini meatloaves, lasagna rolls, etc. |
| Meatballs, lasagna, enchiladas, chicken pot pie, cornbread, pesto |
| I'm not precious about homemade food. The chocolate dipped strawberries from the freezer section of Trader Joe's are great. |

Muffins
Lasagna Mac and cheese Look at the grocery store freezer section and then make your own versions. |
| I used to make a few dozen breakfast burritos to stock our freezer during ski season. I individually wrapped them in wax paper and then foil and kept the paper on when reheating in the microwave. |

Tuna noodle casserole
Swedish meatballs Homemade sauces like bolognese Bread Chicken curry Peruvian chicken Salsa Cakes I make sure to put in a container or foil or a Ziploc bag and label with date and item. |

DH and I recently became empty nesters and I've been freezing many of our dinners.
Chicken Pot Pie: instead of making a full pot pie, I make four smaller pot pies - I have four small loaf pans. pour 1/4 of the filling into each loaf pan; top each with 1/4 of the crust; I do not cook the pie at this point but wrap the entire thing in foil; put each pan into a freezer ziploc bag. The night before I want to eat the pie, I pull one of out of the freezer. I then bake as normal. A fresh pot pie for two. Lasagna and soups - I cook them and then freeze leftovers into ziploc freezer bags. Again, I will put two servings into each freezer bag. With pre-cooked food I can wait until the morning of the day we are going to eat them to pull out of the freezer. Cookie dough - I make dough and then roll the dough into balls and pop them in the freezer on a cookie sheet for about 15 - 20 minutes. I don't cover them at this point - its just to get the dough cold enough so they don't stick together in a baggie. Then I put them in ziploc freezer bags. Some recipes call for the dough to sit out for half an hour before baking; others can bake from frozen but might need one or two extra minutes in the oven. I date all of my freezer bags so I know how long the item has been frozen. Every week before I go to the grocery store, I check my freezer and decide if there are any meals that need to be eaten that week. |
| When my kids were on swim team and time was crunched, I looked up a bunch of the disturbingly-named "dump meals" that could be assembled in advance, frozen, and then dumped into an instant pot for quick, hands-off dinners I could make while getting everything else done. That was really helpful! Search for "dump meal" or "dump dinner" plus your appliance/method of choice (crock pot, instant pot, baked, etc.) |
