The Substance movie

Surprised there's not a thread about this? I just watched it last night. It started out fairly promising, good premise, etc. But my god - the last 20 min. or so were just painful and waaaaaay too much. WTH? How on earth was this an Oscar contender?

I think there was a thread? I could not physically watch the last part and had to stop. I did enjoy the rest of the movie.

I was just talking to my husband about this. I am so over all of the Oscar contender movies these days. They are all so dark and unwatchable. I tried to watch the Substance and just had to stop because I just could not visually handle all the nonsense. Same thing happened to me when I tried to watch Anora. I could not finish that movie either and was angry watching it until I turned it off. Why is everything so twisted and dark these days? I do not know what it says about the state of our society and culture. I would love to see a non-weird and heartwarming movie.

I remember when Oscar nominees were (for the most part) beautifully shot, sweeping sagas or small, extremely well-done indie films. Certainly, no soft porn or silly horror flicks. I'm so disgusted with both Anora and The Substance. Were there any nominated films that were actually good?

I liked it. I thought it was visually interesting and bold in its own way. I went in with very low expectations, which helped.

Audacious film. I loved it.

Look at where we are. Look at who is POTUS. We are living in the era of the lowest common denominator when people get off on watching real people/strangers lives and our very country destroyed by a chainsaw-wielding megalomaniac. Of course current pop culture is dark and twisted. A huge portion of our population has gone dark and twisted.

Right.

Remember Musk says the fundamental problem in our society is empathy.

The media have trained us to consider the murder of women prime time entertainment.
