Department of Education

Sounds like Dept of Education is on the chopping block. Any idea if the plan is to return the funding to the states via block grants, or will they simply leave states to choose between closing schools or raising taxes? And… is there anything stopping a state from simply abolishing public education altogether?

Nothing stops a state from abolishing public education. I think they could even ban cities and counties from providing public education.

I don't think that is planned by any state, and if it were planned the existence of a federal Department of Education wouldn't change things.

Many New England states do not require school attendance.

How will Trump enforce federal mandates and get rid of “wokeism” if the power goes back to the states?

Can't be legally done without an Act of Congress. I don't think there are 60 votes in the senate for this.

But I am sure the Administration will break the law and decimate the agency.

Who here uses FAFSA? Raise your hand!
Who here has a special needs kid who gets support? Raise your hand!

Once teachers start calling in sick, the gop will start to walk this back.

There are not 60 votes in the senate to abolish it, so I guess they will just cut it back until it is meaningless.

Those are the teachers who need to find a different field. Good riddance.

Children deserve an education, not radical indoctrination.

Teacher here, who is home sick today. There is no plans for us to call in sick over this. Stop fear mongering. We had meetings at school and they said it won’t affect the budget as much as people think.

I, personally, am in favor of charter options. Public schools have done downhill in VA in the past ten years and no I am not a troll. I am a real teacher and a parent and yes, my kid has an IEP.

Getting rid of the Department of Education does not abolish education. P

The Department of Education did not exist until Carter created it. i think it was 1980.

I taught before and after the Department of Education was formed.

Title I pre-dates the Department of Education and it will exist after it goes away. Many public laws regarding special education, learning disabilities, etc. pre-date the Department of Education. I was teaching when many of those were enacted.

I don't think people realize what a mess the Dept of Education has been. Student loans existed prior to the Dept of Education. They have always been an issue, but it became much worse under this department.

It is just a bureaucracy peeling off $$ that would be better spent at the local level where the instruction happens.

Aren't schools already run by states? What do you think pays for your local public schools, DOE? Your RE taxes and more.

No. The mess has been at the state level and the district level. The mess comes from parents who think they know more than the educators. The mess comes from people sitting in comfy county offices making policies and programs without understanding or listening to the educators who are in the thick of it every day. Funding is at risk. So sit down.
