Have you ever caught your kid cheating with ChatGPT?

For example, when doing homework, solving math problems or writing code or writing essays.

How did you handle it? What did you do?

My 16 & 18 yrs olds use ChatGPT and deepseek frequently.
I’m not sure just how they use it.
At this point it’s not my parenting job to hang over them and try to monitor this.
I wish I had a better understanding of these technologies and how I could use them (I have no clue, but I’m glad my kids do)

My kids use AI for math HW. The HW is a completion grade and their teachers do not consistently go over it in class. So, they use AI to check work and answer questions when they can’t do problems.

Freshman in A2 and Junior in DE and both have A+…and grades are 95% based on quizzes/tests at an academic private with no retakes. I’d say AI is successfully supporting their math learning.

It's not cheating

My college kid was tasked with writing poems using AI by his freshman writing prof. I doubt he could use AI productively for his specialized courses now.

My high schooler doesn't use AI. She can do all the work without breaking a sweat and with AI, she'd have to worry about inaccuracies, so...

I have used AI for research and I've found gaps and inconsistencies. You can't rely on it at all.

You don't have enough information to make that claim.

So my DD does it all in her own, and really gets frustrated that other kids use AI to do their homework. It is not an enforceable ban of course but it does tick her off.

Yes, my kid uses it, but we insist she cite it when she does.

AI tools are everywhere in my professional field, so I think it's dumb to try to ban them for teens. They WILL use them, so the parents' and teachers' job is to teach them how to use it ethically, responsibly, and efficiently.

lol ok

I mean I use ChatGPT all day every day to do my job. The schools are going to have to pivot and teach how to work with it instead of pretending it's not a factor now.

+1. I don't use it every day but my boss told me to utilize it, so now I use it as a starting point.

There's nothing to catch as we taught them how to use AI to enhance their learning.

My DD is a big fan of Gemini (she may be the only person who is, lol) and my son prefers DeepSeek then ChatGPT.

DD's APUSH teacher incorporated a unit on AI, deep fakes, and fake news. I think he may be the first teacher in their school to cover those topics. Kind of wild and IMO, schools need to create a class just for those topics and it should be required for all students.

People are way too quick to believe everything on the internet these days. Trust but verify has gone away in favor of being the first person to comment or make the comment that gets the most likes.

So smart.

No, but one of my kids' teachers told the class that he uses ChatGPT to give them feedback on their work which I find super annoying.
