17 mo DS loves hummus but recently started showing an allergic reaction, I imagine to tahini (red splotches on his face). I tried replacing tahini with sunflower butter, but the taste was off and DS turned up his nose at it. ![]() |
I make my own. Can of chick peas, squeeze of lemon juice, 1 clove of garlic, 2-3 TBS of olive oil (or more to taste depending on how smooth you want it). You can also use a bit of the chickpea liquid to smooth it out |
oh and salt and pepper if you are ok with DS having it |
Trader Joe's "original" hummus is tahini-free. |
Don't forget the cumin and sea salt. |
I just use chick peas, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. |
really?? awesome. Thanks (OP here) |
make sure it's not the chickpeas he is allergic to. my sister has peanut allergies, but it also mildly allergic to chickpeas. i think the two can be realted. |
OP here. Trader Joe's hummus - all varieties - has tahini. Just went there. |
Thanks. It's a mild reaction so I'm going to test the recipe w/o tahini to rule it out, and then go from there. |
Really? Mine says "Original - No Tahini" on it. Maybe it was sold out. I know it's really popular. |
OP, TJ's definitely does have a version without the Tahini -- I buy it for my kids as well. They also get splotchy. |
Besides food allergies, are there other health reasons to not want to eat tahini? |
Ditto, I also add a small jar/can or drained roasted red peppers. It makes it smoother without adding too much oil. Trader Joe's has a tahini free hummas, I buy it because I prefer the taste without tahini. |
OP Here. Finally found the tahini-free hummus at TJs and it is very tasty! DS loves it. THANKS 15:50. |
