Yesterday on an Alaska Airlines cross country flight a woman got on with a pit mix. The dog was huge, it wasn't wearing a service vest and tugging at the leash and whining for the entire boarding process. She sat a few rows behind me but they made an announcement that it was an entirely full flight so I doubt the dog had its own seat. There is absolutely no way this was a service dog. How on earth was this allowed? If that dog was next to me on a six hour flight I would have flipped the eff out. People have lost their minds. |
There are strict rules on weight limits for dogs in cabins. It's by weight ONLY. There is not restriction on breed or service status. So either the airline did not comply with its own weight guidelines for a dog in the cabin, or you're lying when you describe the dog as huge. |
Usually the dog has to fit in a carrier under the seat.

I mean I have a dog, I've had six dogs in my life of various breeds. The dog was huge. I have no idea how this woman even sat with it. Also the Alaska airlines website says "The pet must stay in its carrier (including head and tail) with the door/flap secured at all times in the boarding area (during boarding and deplaning), Alaska Lounge, and while onboard the aircraft." |
Exactly. Sounds like the OP is lying. |
Why would I be lying about this?? I was shocked. I'm actually going to lodge a complaint with Alaska today. |
Why would you lodge a complaint? It had literally no impact on you. |
Large unrestrained dogs (of any breed) do not belong on airplanes. I have a dog. I like dogs. But this is insane. |
Maybe this will get them to enforce their own policy in the future. People shouldn't be forced to sit next to a large poorly behaved dog on a long flight. |
I would complain. They aren’t enforcing the weight and bagging requirement of dogs. Hope you took photos too. And hat it didn’t smell.
Otherwise there are other ways to bring the larger dogs in your flight- they cost money and it’s in the heated baggage part. Same as if you moved abroad and had to ship and then quarantine your animal. |
Good for you OP. They used to require dogs of a certain size to be crated and placed in the hold.. |
Sounds like it was an uneventful flight, in spite of the large dog in the cabin. Maybe the airline made an exception for some reason. Sounds like no big deal. |
Complain and make this as public as possible.
|
And yet, you live to tell the tale. |
Maybe it was a service dog of some kind. |
