Death Valley at spring break?

It seems NPS shutdowns would have minimal impact for this type of park. EO issues aside, what's it like visiting mid-April?

Do it! We went in early April and it was amazing. Don't forget the Amargosa Opera House.

Will you stay at the Oasis?

We're roughing it at Stovepipe Wells. What did you like best about the Amargosa Opera House?

It's incredible, and I'm glad we did it once in our lives. Usual advice still stands, OP. Stick to main roads, bring water, drive a well-maintained car.

Incredible. I stayed at the Oasis in a casita. Enjoy

Totally worthwhile if you’re into hiking and into sun rises! Really amazing formations. Still think about the date bread at the lodge. Heed warnings from rangers.

It's incredible and you should go, but I am not sure staffing problems will have minimal impact. They could just shut it for safety reasons, since so many people need saving and/or ruin the delicate ground when they go off-road. Make sure you have trip insurance.

If they do close and you need an alternative, Palm Springs is nice at that time of year and Joshua Tree NP (being less deadly) may be less likely to close.

FYI Coachella is Palm Sunday and Easter weekend this year

Incredible place! Did a day trip from Vegas and would have loved more - but yeah they would definitely close it off in a shutdown.

A major highway runs thru Death Valley. They’re not going to shut it down.

We loved Death Valley at spring break. Definitely exceeded our expectations. Stay in the park if possible if you want to visit more than one day. Staying outside the park is just very far away. We had some windstorms but rangers can give advice on canyons and other areas that are less impacted.

My favorite National park. So unique and worth it. There may be some residual wild flowers still in April. Stock your car extremely well and prepare for tons of driving and different weather conditions. Stay at the Oasis if you can afford it. The best sights in the park look enormously far apart on the map, but due to flat roads and no traffic you can cover a ton of ground quickly and see lots.

Definitely do the sand dunes, salt flats, and at least one real hike.

They can shut the park and leave 190 open to through traffic. They've done so before.

DP here. What does this mean? Sounds ominous.

We did it as a day try from Vegas last spring break and really enjoyed it. It was still over 100 at the bottom but reasonable up top. Got to see a super bloom too.
