FSU

Hi! Ignore this if your kid is Ivy bound or T20.

My DC is in at FSU and got in state tuition. Waiting on some others, but this seems to check all of the boxes, a beautiful campus, nice weather and decent for major. Waiting on UGA, rejected UF. Also interested in UTK. (only wants warm weather). In at Clemson SC Ohio- but at the moment seems more excited about UTK and FSU.

I know UF is higher ranked, but I think FSU is rising and a good option. My kid had great test and GPA but isn't super studious so I don't see her thriving at a super hard college even if she somehow got in.

Anyone else apply or have any insight? We don't care about politics so don't worry about that piece.

Knoxville, TN and Clemson, SC are not as warm as most people from up north think they are for most of the months kids are in school. FSU sounds like a great option for your kid.

Hi! My kid got in last night too, also rejected at UF but in OOS Maryland + OOS Michigan. I know people will be surprised but FSU & Maryland are much better for my kid’s intended major. Have you & kid visited? It’s a traditional-looking campus with red brick buildings.

It is easy to get there from here with a direct DCA-Tallahassee flight. FSU also has living-learning communities which happen to also be some of the best (and newer!) dorms.

I realize that FSU has a big Greek and “party school” reputation but Honors or a LLC forges student bonds very well, imo. It’s going to be a tough decision for my kid’s intended major between Terps or Seminoles!

Congrats and best wishes to you and your kid

Wow congrats to you! Mine was rejected in-state UMD-- annoying but she had no interest. She had 34 and 4.7 GPA-- but not crazy rigor. 8 AP's -- just not the super hard ones lol. We haven't visited any of them -- only UGA and UF. Visiting both soon. Michigan is fortune so don't blame you if you pass it up.
We have kid (and friends) at UGA, Wisconsin, Ohio State-- they're all big party and Greek schools. I can't imagine FSU is any different.

geez, crazy that your kid’s stats are higher than my kid ‘s, sorry that she didn’t get into UMD.
you’re too right that I don’t really want to pay all that for U of M lol

Hope you all have a good tour and get a positive impression of FSU! she will succeed, build a community, and have a good time wherever she lands

My niece is in-state at FSU and loves it. FWIW she got into UF and chose FSU instead which I still don’t understand, but that’s how much she thought it was better for her.

My ds is going to FSU. We are in FL and people still tend to go for UF over FSU if accepted because for some reason it is deemed more prestigious, but the student experience seems terrible, with lots of online content and more stress and competition from what we hear. This is anecdotal, but someone I know has a child who wanted to switch majors at UF Sophomore year and it was rejected. He has to transfer out. The feedback for FSU is very different and overwhelmingly positive. I personally was so impressed with the campus and general feel as well.

My DS was accepted at UF and FSU OOS. We flew down and toured both campuses last spring. He fell in love with both schools and campuses. He's decided on UF for his major, but FSU is a wonderful school. Congrats!

Kid in at FSU also and seems excited…
I’m concerned with low percentage of OOS kids…around 15% which is a lot lower than Clemson and UTK.
I guess we are also surprised at FSU ranking…in the 50s compared to UTK (outside of top 100…). So feels like we need to seriously consider it.

BTW - The brick sidewalks and tropical landscapes around FSU make you feel like your on a Disney ride Truly beautiful.

FSU is also ranked the 23rd Best Public University by US News and World Report. Also, their overall acceptance rate is usually around 24 percent. I remember during our tour they had the fight song blaring from the stadium as it was recorded during a football game. You could hear it all the way across campus. Gave me goose bumps.

Something to keep in mind about FL kids is they are very diverse statistically speaking. So maybe not OOS, but you will see many kids who are bicultural, bilingual and binational.

Thanks. My concern is not about diversity but more about tons of kids knowing each other from high school, going home on weekends making it harder for an OOS kid.

Tallahassee is really far from the most populated areas (8+ hours from Miami!) so odds of that are not high.
