Winter is KILLING me this year

Anonymous
I have no motivation at all to go outside. I’m feeling hopeful as the days get longer that warmth is just around the corner, but I can’t handle the cold like I used to. I’m cold all of the time. I’m not even motivated to go to my gym after work because the walk from my warm car into the semi-warm gym, only to come out to darkness, it’s just not worth it. It’s depressing.

I’m hoping by mid-March we will be over the hump, but how do I survive until then without this immense guilt that I’m not being more active or spending time outside?

I don't think it's been so bad? It's been pretty mild and mostly going to rain (unfortunately) from here on til Jan 2025. ~shrugs~

I'm spending 5 weeks in Italy starting Wednesday too.

The nice days help, but I’m still cold!

Italy in February is COLD, plus no or very bad heat. Just so you know.

Coldest winter I remember in decades.

I know this sounds maddening, but honestly, for me it's the clothing.

When I was a kid my parents were out outdoorsy at all. They never taught me about proper footwear and didn't really do athletic wear or performance-gear (whatever it was in the 90s...like they never would have tought to do a northface like coat but instead were like "hey this is a heavier pea coat!") so I just didn't know how to dress for the cold. My mom wore flats and heels all year round, on ice, and was just cold. Even now they don't really wear sneakers or warm coats beyond fashionable ones. Gloves were one layer of leather or thin woven. They are old school. It's so odd in retrospect.

It wasn't until I was in my 20s and met my husband that I realized there were DIFFERENT kinds of boots, some stylish, for rain and snow and snow at work etc... I learned about layering and the differences between a wool bodysuit under a blazer with a scarf versus just three layers of cotton or silk.

I now walk outdoors almost every single day (avoiding ice and cold rain when possible) and beyond a cold face where its exposed I am never cold. Indoors I just layer up (doesn't have to be bulky) and I also keep a heating pad at work. Blankets all over the house.

You can be warmer. I promise. But winter is still dreary and not pleasant.

Oh, it’s been awful. Force yourself to go to the gym, it will help. Just do it.

It’s been a mild, easy winter and you live in the mid-Atlantic anyway. I live where J haven’t seen the ground since the beginning of December and even then it’s been mild.

So maybe this is not the thread for you

This is true. I have dogs that need 2+ hours of walking everyday, so I don't really have the option of hibernating. I run cold and have Raynauds, but if you have to adapt, you can. You just need the right gear.

It seems to be lasting forever.

This has been a cold one! It's been a great winter for me to start an at home weight training series.

I feel like people say this every year. It's been average, IMO, but my electric bill sees it differently.

Finally, a real winter. I suffer so much when we have wishy washy rain and no snow or biting wind. I come from Scotland.

My husband was born in the tropics and lives for summer. In winter he's in hibernation mode.

Were we actually supposed to end up together?
