I see other ES kids wear tank top, NBA jersey, short sleeves and shorts in this DMV area when they do basketball practice. It is freezing cold outside, but they are like going for cool sporty look. My child wears long sleeves shirt and pants, and I feel like he is the odd one. I don't care much about look, but I feel like this could be one of the fitting in problem among kids. I also think that kids play basketball unfortunately are more cocky and mean, not nice.
I want to ask popular wear for basketball wear. I see they wear something black underneath the thin jersey and shorts, are those 32 degree undershirt? Some wear extra white half sleeves, what are they? Are those for look only? Do long shorts and long sweat pants affect mobility or do fine at game/practice indoor court? |

There are long tights and long shorts length tights that kids wear. Dick’s Sporting Goods would have these. Also kids sometimes wear compression tops. Kids also wear shooting sleeves or compression leg things with some knee padding that make diving for loose balls on a hardwood floor somewhat easier.
Note that kids playing outside in cold weather get surprisingly warm - my kid used to play down to about 25 degrees in a t shirt and compression tights with shorts. |
| Are you saying you send your kid to indoor basketball practice in a long sleeved shirt and pants? |
Yes. |
|
Oh god. No.
When you sign your kid up for a sport, you--the parent--need to make sure they are dressed appropriately for the activity. For basketball practice, they wear athletic shorts, a t-shirt and basketball shoes or running shoes. |
Sleeveless shirts are ideal basketball players are always using their arms and shoulders above their head a standard T-shirt just feels wrong after a while; it comes untucked every time you go for a rebound. OK so no one tucks their shirts, but you see how it has the potential to impede motion or just be uncomfortable. Some kids may benefit from compression type leggings. I think it was a thing for the Bulls for a while Jordan and Pippen liked them. My DD loves the cool gym and winter is her favorite time of year. I think it may be genetic. I sweat profusely during the summer and quite a bit during the winter my favorite accessory is a good gym towel. It helps to stay dry even during the winter which is part of the magic of the quick dry compression suits and jerseys. |
Op here. Omg ..I don't do sports myself, so I don't know. We have many althetic short sleeves shirt & althetic shorts from Nike/Adidas/under armor because that's what he wears at summer, spring/fall soccer seasons and summer camp. He has basketball sneakers. I put all althetic clothing away because it is winter now. Okay, I can buy him compression leggings and shirt. Are the links below correct for my needs? Why??? Isn't he super hot? Do you not have logical thoughts? Shorts and tee shirts are fine. Shop at Dicks sporting goods and let your kid pick some things out. |
I don't as I don't use them, and their only a few brands that fit a 38in inseam anyway, so even if I wanted them... I do use base layers for outdoor running with ski socks, but that's different, not as much flexibility is needed especially in the upper body, and I can cover that gap with big socks. |
Op here. I work from home and I feel cold when I step outside. I don't exercise or do any sports. He wears 2 layers long sleeves plus jacket and long pants daily going to school, and I leave work early to pick him up and go straight to practice this winter. He does not complain, so I don't know. |
... I'm sorry, have we completely forgotten how to dress in layers? If it's cold outside and they have to be outside for longer than 30 seconds or so, just put them in a sweatshirt and sweatpants over their basketball clothes and have them remove the warm layers when they walk into the gym. Please do not send a child into a basketball practice wearing long pants of ANY kind - it will be an immediate signal that they (and you) are not to be taken seriously. |
Unless they have a Jordan logo, https://www.nike.com/w/basketball-compression-baselayer-3glsmz4pwb Snap pants are cool though, you can get those off and on quickly without taking your shoes off. I like those workout pants with the zippers on the side, except sometimes my basketball shoes are too big to get them off. |
