DS accepted UVA (in state) and Michigan (OSS) as a mechanical engineering major but possibly may want to change to chemical engineering. Michigan is higher ranked in engineering but for undergraduate, is it worth paying more than double the cost?
How are engineering majors from UVA faring in the job market? What about when applying to graduate school? Is Michigan worth the price? DS likes both of the schools (probably likes UVA a bit more because his close friends will be attending) but he is concerned about UVA’s engineering ranking and how that will affect his future marketability. Thank you for your thoughts. |

I'm not sure what you would gain coming out of UMich for that price differential.
If both were OOS then maybe? But I think job prospects or grad school would be similar and there would be a whole lot of $$ saved. |
| Have you seen both? The facilities for engineering are night and day to me, with Michigan being far superior. Lots of other things to consider but engineering facilities are not close |
| UVa engineering grads have no problem funding a job. Either is fine, but we would never pay OOS differential given those choices. UVa Engineering is a tough admit, so congratulations. |
| Engineering at UVA is an afterthought. OP, surely you know this. |

Your kid should’ve aimed for VT instead of UVA if interested in engineering. Nobody cares about UVa engineering. But it’s also silly to pay OOS for undergraduate. UM engineering program is a top notch program.

Michigan has nearly 10K engineering students. UVA is a little over 1K. |
Where did you go? |
Agree. |
At UVA, engineering degrees are 10% of all Bachelor's degrees awarded. At Michigan, engineering degrees are 13% of Bachelor's degrees awarded. Not all that different adjusted for school size. |
My company cares about UVA engineering. We hire lots of them. "UVA isn't good for STEM" is just stupid DCUM conventional wisdom that just isn't true in the real world. - Engineer |
DP. +10 |
LOL. Yeah sure |
So, at UVa, E students will be a name not a number, while at U Mich E students will be a number not a name. |
Nope, at UVa also a (4 digit) number |
