Sorry if this has been brought up before, I don't come here often. We just received our DC's 2nd grade report card and I can't believe how useless it is. There is NOTHING in it that is specific to our child. It gives us no sense at all of where THEY are in their academic and socio-emotional learning journey. Is there anything we as parents can do to complain about this? |
Just send your teacher a message asking for the info you would like or ask for a quick phone call. Alternatively there is a parent teacher conference in the spring and you can get info then.
I agree the report cards are mostly useless but in my experience at least I’ve never had a teacher who wasn’t open to giving me more context when asked. |
Ask to meet with the teacher. |

I mean, yeah. I have two kids in DCPS and we've never received a report card with specific feedback. They usually read like a compliance requirement.
I don't really get why they do it this way, as it seems like a lot of administrative lift for almost zero useful feedback. My best advice is to reach out to the teacher with specific questions. (It's not their fault. This is the format they're given!) |
It's all boiler plate so the administrative lift isn't much. The other kids in the class are getting the exact same, down to the word, comments. |
Talk to your state board of ed representative and maybe they can change the template |
I find the 1-4 helpful only insofar as if my kid ever got a 1 or 2 I would reach out to the teacher. I would also reach out about any decrease between quarters.
Our teachers do but a personalized comment in their boxes at the very end. |
Have a parent teacher conference to understand more. |
The conference schedule is bizarre too. When I was growing up there was a conference at the end of each quarter alongside the report card. I can’t understand why we get a report card and then have to wait half a term for the conference. |
This is actually something you can advocate to change at the school level. Marie Reed used the January 27 PD day for parent teacher conferences and then the March 13 DCPS wide PTC day will be their PD day. I think it makes so much more sense to have the 2nd conference in January. Mid-March is too late. |
Is this a Title 1 school? |
We are at a title 1 school and our K report card has great detail. The teacher went above and beyond I guess. |
Is it a DCPS? Because, if so, it’s exactly the same report card and you just don’t realize yet that the comments are cookie cutter. You’re thinking wow, the teacher know my kid so well. No, there are like 4 comment options for that whole class. You literally click a button. |
It’s DCPS. she types his name in comments as needed. And the comments at the end are personalized. We also talk to the teachers so maybe that helps. We ask where we can help, etc (not saying other parents don’t, we ask for insight is all we mean). |
