What is this virus and how many are sick?

Anonymous
I miss the days when we were told what percent of the school had covid. Every kid in our neighborhood has been sick this week. Does anyone have an anecdotal idea about how many kids missed school this week? And what horrible illness is this? I know some kids tested positive for flu and then there’s strep and norovirus. Covid too?

We're in a small private MoCo elementary school which currently has strep, covid, and flu circulating. Everything is everywhere this year.

It’s February. People are sick. It’s super common for this time of year, we are all inside a lot and some viruses spread more in winter than summer. Before Covid we didn’t know the number and that was ok. The knowing doesn’t help, does it? Just do your best to hydrate, eat well, sleep well, and hope if your family gets hit that it goes away fast

Could be the flu, which is going around. There is now a Flu A/Flu B/COVID test available OTC that you can use to check.

Are you saying that before 2020 you sought out hard data outlining the prevalence of multiple illnesses spreading in the public schools?

I have my doubts, but kudos for your diligence if that’s the case.

But in reality, what would you do differently? I teach in an elementary school and am exposed constantly. I obviously don’t want to get sick, but I know it’s inevitable. I do my best to keep it away (eat healthy, wash my hands, all the things), but I don’t think that tracking the numbers will do that much t protect me or anyone. If I am sick but still have to come to work, I will wear a mask to protect the kids I work with….teachers often do this at our school, even our principal, and it’s not considered crazy. I guess I could wear a mask proactively, but I haven’t seen that it’s gotten too bad in our school to warrant that.

Do you actually think you will be informed of a virus around school?

I think it's just a random virus, but entails a high fever and fatigue for a few days. DD tested neg for both flus and covid before the rest of us caught it.

Kids in my circles mostly have flu A or test negative for everything.

Many obviously sick students are being sent to school. A student may be out one day with a fever (per an email from a parent) and then arrive to school the next day looking quite unwell (red face, lethargic, open mouth sneezing and coughing, etc). Often, the child has been given fever reducing meds (per the child) which will mask the fever for several hours. By the time the meds have worn off and the child is sent to the health room for a temperature check, the child has already spent a few hours in the classroom.

Some families are communicating when their child has tested positive for flu, Covid, or strep. So many students have been sick and out of school for several days. However, there are also many parents who are sending obviously sick children to school and this is contributing towards the rapid fire spread of flu, Covid, and strep throughout the classrooms.

Flu or X, Y, Z... who knows. A lot of people are sick. Why do you need numbers? Sick people need to stay home.

Honestly back before covid I called this time of year the season of creeping crud. The only reason to sort out what crud you have is for meds - tamiflu, antibiotics, etc….

Mine had flu and strep this week! And our doc said DC wasn't the first he saw with both that day..

We’re in NoVA, but we had about 15% of the students out last week.
