Podcasts — WHY ARE THEY SO LONG

Anonymous
So many podcasts are hours and hours long, like Rogan can be 4 hours.

Is about being authentic? Being too cheap to edit? Long enough to cover a workers shift or something?

They like the sound of their own voice and don't mind wasting other people's time.

Stop listening to "current events" or opinion podcasts where it's a talking head and guests waffling on and on. Instead, listen to podcasts about specific subjects you find interesting. I get my current events/politics elsewhere, not in podcasts; so the few the podcasts I listen to are about (1) a TV show I watch (rewatch/behind the scenes podcast); (2) history, with interesting historians and their guests; (3) science. So find what interests you and there's probably a podcast about it. None of the ones I listen to are more than an hour per episode, and many are shorter.

They are good for being put to sleep

+1 Most podcasts I listen to are under an hour. For science, I like Short Wave. One science story a day usually <15 min

I like Rich Roll, but the length is one reason I stopped listening to his podcasts. I acknowledge that my attention span has decreased but I can stay interested in a whole audiobook so I don't think that's the issue.

I don't like long movies either.

Most topics could be covered in an hour. Or they could do a part two for a complex topic.

Real journalists were trained to edit their work. These podcasters are nothing but blowhards. I’ve never gotten the podcast trend.

That’s ridiculous. I read the transcript only. I hate listening.

This. It's pretty simple.

I don't understand it either. I see that Joe Rogan is the number 1 podcast in America. It's 4 hours long! Who the F is listening to a podcast for 4 hours every day? My dog doesn't even have that kind of free time.

It's for extremely bored people who spend hours commuting.

It's about control over your attention. The more time he can control your attention, the less time you will spend learning that what they are saying is completely wrong.

One thing I cant stand is true crime podcasts that stretch out a story over 12 hour long episodes. Why on earth would I want to hear every single detail and tiny anecdote that the producers can come up with, random filler stories and meaningless exposition, clearly trying so hard to stretch the time out as long as possible? If Dateline can tell great true crime stories in 40 minutes, 90 minutes tops, then I certainly dont need to waste TWELVE HOURS of my life listening to these meandering stories that tell the same thing

Well there's websites and services that summarize clickbait so you don't have to click.

"It’s Official—Costco Just Confirmed a Controversial Change to Its Food Courts | They're switching from Pepsi to Coke products."

You could make an efficient podcast that trims out the annoying stuff.

There are people who don't listen to the whole thing. and\ or they speed up the playback.

Also, don't discount how many males in this country do very little and just stew in their 'persecuted' brains.
