Fenty a Republican nominee?

Anonymous
In http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/09/AR2010090906429.html Mike DeBomis raises the possibility that Fenty might win the Republican primary as a write-in. I'm not sure many Republicans would have thought of writing in Fenty, although with nobody on the ballot, he might have outpolled Schwartz and Mara, who would, I suppose, be the most likely other possibilities. But now that the possibility has been raised, I think it's almost a sure bet. DeBonis says Fenty has said he won't accept the Republican nomination, but that's boilerplate when you're running in the Dem primary. If he loses, I think the temptation will be unbearable: "I owe it to all those who voted for me in either primary."

So, my question is: Do you think that the Republicans and others voting in November would be enough to compensate for the Dem votes he'd lose by running as a Repub?

I'm a dem, but would be excited about the idea of voting for Fenty as the republican nominee. Genius idea. How can we spread the word to republicans to write him in?

I think the best plan would be to get the Post to publish the idea. In a Mike DeBonis article, perhaps?

Have you read the comments to that article? This idea smells desperate - because it is. It will. not. work.

(I say this as someone who's a Republican, but I switched my registration to Democrat a month ago JUST SO THAT I COULD VOTE FOR GRAY.)

Your assumptions about what Republicans will do are off base. Trust me.

Here's the deal, Fenty needs to spend some time in the wilderness growing up politically. He's young, he still has a future in politics, but not this term. Not as mayor.

Can Fenty supporters really defend this?

They won't even bother to learn about it. They're a one-hit wonder voting crew: Rhee! Rhee! Rhee!

Yes, sweetie, we can. In fact, the City Paper, one of the papers you linked to, endorsed Fenty, and for all of the right reasons:

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/39709/2010-endorsements/

Oh! And the Washington Post raises some pretty good questions and makes a fairly good defense of these allegations, too:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/28/AR2010082802895.html

But really, these allegations are about as old and stale and crusty as my dog's morning shit. The fact that you apparently just learned of them and/or find them -- and are proclaiming them to be dispositive -- says much more about you than it does about the mayor.

Here's the deal, straight and hard: Fenty is going to win the Republican nomination tomorrow. Whether he chooses to accept it is another matter. If he does, hold on tight, because this thing will be far, far from over.

I think, as a Republican, you are an outlier. My guess is that among GOP voters, Fenty would beat Gray like a red-headed stepchild.

Of course I didn't just learn about. However, had you bothered to connect the dots the letter post-dates this from your link:

"Fenty, we now know, isn’t a half-smart pol. When he came to chat with Washington City Paper, he dismissed concerns over a shady parks contract for his failed dry cleaner pal Sinclair Skinner by saying an independent city authority cut the deal and he didn’t have the statutory authority to override it. True! But he had the moral authority. Is he too dumb to realize that sort of muddy message, even on an absurdly overhyped scandal, hurts his ability to sell major initiatives? It’s not that Fenty failed to sell his administration; until his poll numbers tanked, he didn’t even try."

Which as defenses go, is pretty weak tea. Seeing how it's B.S. and Slover's letter proves it.

Here's the deal, straight and hard: Gray IS the new mayor and there's nothing you and the DC GOP can do about it.

Sweetie.

Lady, I'm not going to comment or give you advice on the more . . .private aspects of your marriage. Suffice it to say that men require a certain amount of . . . intellectual stimulation within their marriage to keep them from straying. If you think that a statement from a disgruntled city employee proves anything, well . . .

And didn't your mother tell you anything about chickens and hatching and counting? "Vince Gray IS our Mayor!" Really? Then why is he already crying to mommy about how it all ain't fair? Doesn't make him look good this early in the day, does it? And, while we're speaking of counting, perhaps you should count provisional ballots. We aren't going to have a winner in this primary for at least 10 days. Probably more.

But back to counting. Nothing the GOP can do about it? Nothing meaning zero? Huh. They are going to nominate him. That's something. And, unless Fenty gets his ass resoundingly kicked (a mere loss will not do it) he is going to accept the nomination. Why do you think he hired Anita Dunn? For kicks? Why do you think he was on Morning Joe this morning, where they were practically sucking him off for all he has done for school reform? Why did he evade the question as to what he might do if he loses the primary? Why have so many national publications started focusing on him and practically endorsing him? To lay the groundwork for him to say that he has to run as a Republican for the good of the city and the country.

Which? He does.

Can you add 2 + 2? We're still on counting; pay attention please. There are 30,000 registered Republicans in DC. Add in another 72,000 unaffiliateds + change. And Fenty keeps all or at least most of his Democratic voters.

Hold on tight, lady. And do remember: Men want to come home to a good meal, a smiling, attractive wife, and some good, intellectual conversation.

That's three more things for you to practice counting, lady. Try hatching 'em, too.

Women like to come home to a good meal, a smiling, attractive husband and some good, intellectual conversation. We also like the house and yard to be well maintained and we don't want that conversation to be about sports.

Agreed. One, two, three: Fenty!

NP here. This post is really weird. Aren't we talking about politics here? What's gone wrong in your relationships that make you wonder about someone else's? Vote for whoever you want, but maybe don't hit the bottle so early next time.

I actually voted Fenty, and think the race is closer than the straw polls and such would indicate. Close enough, at least, that I wouldn't put money on a winner one way or another.

But I'll certainly bookmark this quote on the off-chance that Fenty pulls his bacon out of the fire. 'Cause that way I can start a new discussion using that line as the Subject line.
