I'm hearing that Paris has lots of pickpockets and I'm wondering about having a plan for my phone besides just holding it or keeping it in an inside or zipped pocket. Obviously, I'll have it out a lot because it has pre-purchased tickets, metro pass, and of course is my camera. Have you found a good method for preventing theft of your phone? |
Small fanny pack. Not kidding. Usually under jacket. I also have a under clothes money belt, underwear wtih money pockets (little underwear shorts and a bra with pockets.
I've done some adventure traveling recently and so I had more cash in two currencies than ordinarily. The answer is NOT a backpack. Only put water, food, jackets in there. |
Since it's winter, I intend to wear a slim crossbody bag under my coat, but I will have to have my phone out most of the time. That's why I'm wondering about the lanyard or wrist strap option. |
I’m wondering about this too. Going to London and Paris this summer with teen girls. Trying to think it through. Phones weren’t a thing when I was there 25 years ago. |
Are you sure that's not an exaggeration? Why does your phone need to be out most of the time? When you pull up tickets at a museum or whatever, especially in Paris, you'll be within the doors of the lobby already. You can even just wait until you are directly in front of the employee if you want. I travel frequently and just use a small cross body and take my phone in and out as needed, or sometimes even just have the phone in my jacket pocket. I've never been pickpocketed or had my phone stolen. |
DP here. Walking directions on phone? |
Pick pockets are far more prevalent in Paris. The bigger issue in London is the number of people riding bikes who wait for someone to try and take a picture on their phone and then they ride by and grab it. Must have seen a half dozen tourists all get their phones snatched last year. |

I now wear it on a lanyard to facilitate photo taking. |
I have been using wrist strap/lanyard for years.
Not just a preventative for pickpockets, but it is also insurance against my own fumbling. I can take photos without worrying about dropping it, I can set it on a table in front of me without worrying about a distraction attempt to steal it, and I have very little fear about a pickpocket getting it. |
^ FWIW, I got red ones so it makes it obvious it is tethered to me. Thieves know it won't be an easy grab and move along elsewhere. |
